Post-pandemic marriage trends in Japan: Impacts of economic conditions and parental living arrangements
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted family formation among young people worldwide, contributing to a sharp decline in fertility rates. This study examines whether the relationship between young people’s economic and family circumstances and their transition to marriage changed temporarily or persistently before and after the pandemic in Japan, a context characterized by prolonged pandemic control measures and a rigid gender division …
Deterioration in youth employment, social contexts, and marriage decline in Japan and South Korea
Japan and South Korea are experiencing drastic declines in marriage rates. One of the main factors explaining these declines is deteriorating youth employment. This study examined the effects of youth employment on marriage timing and the moderating effects of social contexts in both countries using longitudinal data and discrete-time logit analysis. The results indicated that unmarried people, particularly men, who were not regular employees wit…
Invitation to the Symposium on Life/Death and Family in Aged Societies
Theoretical Background of the Relationship between Education and Low Fertility in Asia
Deteriorating Employment and Marriage Decline in Japan
As is the case in Western countries, more Japanese are marrying later or remaining unmarried and are postponing childbearing or staying childless. Previous studies revealed that those individuals who were unable to secure regular employment due to the serious recession between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, labelled a 'lost generation,' had a very low marriage rate. But what about subsequent cohorts? Using a discrete-time logit model to analyse Jap…
The supermom trap: Do involved dads erode moms' self-competence
Increasingly, husbands have been expected to share equally in the task of childrearing, especially when their wives are employed. This study examined reactions to these changes in a sample of 78 dual-earner couples with 8-month-old infants. When wives felt that their husbands were skillful caregivers, greater husbands' contribution to caregiving was associated with lower self-competence among wives. In contrast, wives' caregiving behavior was unr…
Pure-tone masking patterns in nonsimultaneous masking conditions
Forward and backward masking patterns were obtained using a 70-dB SPL sinusoidal masker whose frequency was varied and a 3 000-Hz sinusoidal probe signal through an adaptive two-interval forced choice (2IFC) procedure. The temporal course of the residual excitation pattern produced in the auditory system by the masker could be represented by a set of forward masking patterns at different temporal locations after the end of the masker. The shape o…
