  • The Authentic Self Is the Self-Enhancing Self

Open Access•Corey L Guenther, Yiyue Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2024

Authenticity refers to behaving in a manner that aligns with one’s true self. The true self, though, is positive. From a self-enhancement standpoint, people exaggerate their strengths and overlook their shortcomings, forming positively-distorted views of themselves. We propose a self-enhancement framework of authenticity, advocating a reciprocal relation between the two constructs. Trait self-enhancement was associated with higher trait authentic…

  • Home alone yet optimistic

Corey L Guenther, Yiyue Zhang•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2024

    553) we found that despite reporting that others enjoy a more active social life than they do, participants believed that they possessed more social traits than their peers (Study 1), that their level of social activity exceeds the necessary standards for living a satisfying social life (Study 2), and that their social lives would improve significantly in the future (Study 3). Additionally, people were not comparatively pessimistic about the numb…

  • Future self-continuity promotes meaning in life through authenticity

Open Access•Emily K Hong, Yiyue Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 63

We concerned with the emerging construct “future self-continuity” and its psychological consequences. We hypothesized, in particular, that future self-continuity, the perceived connection between one’s present and future self, is related—correlationally and causally—to meaning in life via authenticity, the subjective alignment with one’s true self. We tested and supported this hypothesis in three studies using measurement-of-mediation and experim…

  • Do consumers really value all destination attributes equally over time? the dynamic nature of individual-level attributes and their outcomes

    Yiyue Zhang, Hong‐Youl Ha•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2023

Destination attributes and their outcomes have evolved over time. This study examines the dynamic nature of destination attributes and their outcomes to explain the difference between the initial and later stages of travel by applying a longitudinal approach using two different time intervals. Our findings show that the effect of experiential attributes (i.e. the quality of food and drinks, the quality of accommodation, etc.) on destination satis…

  • Exploring the Effects of Promoting Feminine Leaders on Women’s Interest in STEM

    Open Access•Yiyue Zhang, Kimberly Rios•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2023

In two pre-registered studies ( N = 1,202), female college students expressed greater feelings of belonging and trust in a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) company whose leaders exhibited stereotypically feminine (vs. masculine) characteristics. The positive impact of feminine leaders was found for both female and male leaders and was mediated by participants’ felt similarity to the leaders. This mediation model held even after c…

  • Goal conflict in retirement

    Open Access•Julia S Yarrington, Jennifer M Tomlinson et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2022

We investigated goal conflict between romantic relationships and individual goals. In Study 1, 25 retired couples ( N = 50) discussed a goal perceived as conflicting with the relationship. Dyadic results suggest both actor and partner general perceptions of goal conflict predicted lower relationship satisfaction. Goal conflict around the goal discussed predicted lower responsiveness from partners, higher negative affect, and diastolic blood press…

  • My True Self is Better Than Yours

    Open Access•Yiyue Zhang, Mark D Alicke•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2021

Researchers have assumed that people judge their own true selves, or their authentic and fundamental nature, to be no better than that of others. This assumption conflicts with self-enhancement perspectives, and with studies on comparative biases in self and social judgment, which assume that people tend to view their characteristics and life prospects more favorably than those of others. The five studies in this article demonstrate that comparat…

  • Potentially Toxic Element Contaminations and Lead Isotopic Fingerprinting in Soils and Sediments from a Historical Gold Mining Site

Open Access•Lei Tang, Yiyue Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Lead (Pb) isotopes have been widely used to identify and quantify Pb contamination in the environment. Here, the Pb isotopes, as well as the current contamination levels of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, As, and Hg, were investigated in soil and sediment from the historical gold mining area upstream of Miyun Reservoir, Beijing, China. The sediment had higher 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ratios (1.137 ± 0.0111) than unpolluted soil did (1.167 ± 0.0029), while the soil…

  • Understanding Perceptions of Radical and Liberal Feminists

  • The motivation to maintain favorable identities

Mark D Alicke, Constantine Sedikides et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2019

Findings from research on self-enhancement and self-protection are generally understood to provide evidence for “motivated bias.” Despite their ubiquity, the meaning of “motivation,” “bias,” and “motivated bias” are usually left to intuition. In this article, we clarify the meaning of these terms as they apply to constructing and maintaining desired self-views. We argue that preserving psychological homeostasis (i.e., emotional equilibrium) is as…
