This paper explores the concept of diasporic hybridity through Hanshan's (Cold Mountain) life and poetry during the Tang dynasty (618-907). Departing from traditional diaspora models of forced migration, Hanshan's voluntary exile from the Confucian-dominated capital to the spiritually diverse Tiantai Mountain reveals how internal dislocation can foster hybrid religious identities. Through a close reading of his poetry and spiritual journey, this …

There are two main options for translating λόγος Logos in Chinese versions of John 1:1. One is to use 道Tào, which in this context means Wisdom and Creative Principle; the other is to use 言 Yán, which in this context means Holy Word. Our goal is to (1) give a historical overview of the first uses of 道Tao in the Protestant Bible and 言 Yan in the Catholic Bible and (2) discuss what has been lost, modified, or acquired by using Tao, both for Christia…

Open Access•Xuan Zhao, John Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2023

Livestock overgrazing has led to worldwide grassland degradation, posing a significant threat to plant and soil microbial diversity. However, little is known about whether livestock overgrazing influences plant and soil microbial diversity linkages. We examined relationships between plant and soil microbial beta diversity in eight pairs of ungrazed and overgrazed sites across temperate steppes in northern China. Our results revealed a positive co…

  • A Buddhist reconfiguration of John Hick's pluralistic hypothesis: A Madhyamaka perspective

    Open Access•John Zhao•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2022

In presenting his theory of religious pluralism, John Hick discussed the Buddhist concept of śūnyatā , emptiness, which he regarded as functionally equivalent to his postulated noumenal Real. This article introduces Hick's pluralistic hypothesis and reviews the major criticisms of his theory. It then investigates Hick's understanding of śūnyatā , before arguing that a Madhyamaka interpretation of śūnyatā , within the context of the Buddhist theor…

Open Access•Xuan Zhao, John Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Economics•2018

The parallel between the economic reforms of Chinese Song Dynasty Chancellor Wang Anshi and those associated with Keynesianism has been rather neglected so far. However, understanding the original ideas of Wang Anshi’s economic thought and his reform policies, and comparing those with John Maynard Keynes’, we argue that Wang Anshi’s reforms well deserve the label of ‘proto-Keynesianism’. Both sides reach a consensus about the importance of govern…

  • Cohabitation and Divorce in Canada: Testing the Selectivity Hypothesis

David R Hall, John Z Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1995•Cited by: 24

Findings from various countries indicate that premarital cohabitation is linked to a higher risk of first marriage dissolution. A number of recent studies have argued that this cohabitation effect reflects the fact that cohabitors are a select group in ways that predispose them to divorce. This hypothesis was investigated using data on 8177 ever-married individuals collected from a major Canadian survey. We found that premarital cohabitation was …
