  • Knowledge as creative vision in Maya Philosophy

Alexus Mcleod•ARTICLE•British Journal for the History…•2025

In this paper, I offer an account of a conception of knowledge found throughout the philosophical traditions of the Maya, which are linked to ideas in the broader cluster of related traditions of Mesoamerica. This unique conception of knowledge is based on creativity, vision, and the centrality of human activity in bringing about, maintaining, and understanding the intelligible world. For the precolonial and colonial period Maya, knowledge was un…

  • Transcendence and Non-Naturalism in Early Chinese Thought

    Joshua R Brown, Alexus Mcleod•BOOK•Transcendence and Non-Naturalism…•2021

Transcendence and Substance in Early Chinese Thought offers a new account of the history of early Chinese philosophy, as well as a reconsideration of current understandings of early Chinese thought, by focussing on transcendence and substance. These two concepts are sometimes seen as being at odds with naturalist approaches to philosophy. By offering a robust account of early Chinese thought, Alexus McLeod and Joshua R. Brown argue that in fact n…

Drawing on a rich variety of Indian texts across multiple traditions, including Vedanta, Buddhist, Yoga and Jain, this collection explores how emotional experience is framed, evoked and theorized in order to offer compelling insights into human subjectivity. Rather than approaching emotion through the prism of Western theory, a team of leading Indian philosophers showcase the unique literary texture, philosophical reflections and theoretical para…

  • Philosophy in Eastern Han Dynasty China (25-220 CE)

    Open Access•Alexus Mcleod•ARTICLE•Philosophy Compass•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The philosophy of the Han Dynasty, especially that of the Eastern Han (25-220 CE), is an unjustly neglected area of scholarship on early Chinese thought. In this article, I introduce the thought of a number of important Eastern Han philosophers, with particular attention to Wang Chong, Wang Fu, Xu Gan, and Wang Su. I also explain the major features of Eastern Han thought as distinct from that of the Warring States and Western Han periods, and con…

  • Ren as a Communal Property in the Analects

    Alexus Mcleod•ARTICLE•Philosophy East and West•2012

This essay presents an interpretation of ren 仁 in the Analects that takes it to be a moral property primarily of communities, one that individuals can possess derivatively. Other interpretations of ren, li 禮, and moral agency in the Analects fail to account for the centrality of community in an adequate way, making it peripheral to the main theory, and thus struggling to make sense of the concentration on community in sections of the Analects suc…
