    A Duque•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Historical Review•2022•References: 2

Taking the veneration of John the Baptist in Mandean, Christian, and Islamic religion from the tenth to the thirteenth centuries CE, the paper first gives a phenomenological analysis of the different rituals aroun…

  • La Passio del monje Jorge y la liturgia del martirio en la Córdoba del siglo X

    Open Access•A Duque•ARTICLE•Hispania Sacra•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 15

El presente artículo analiza el martirologio la Passio de Jorge de Mar Sabas, según aparece en el Memoriale Sanctorum (c. 853 A. D.) de Eulogio de Córdoba. This paper examines the Spanish song «Princesita que riega la albahaca» and compares it with other Moroccan versions of the folk tale. Although loosely based on the encounter between King Solomon and Queen Sheba, the story incorporates a series of elements from different folk traditions, while insisting on the motif of the husband-seeking maiden. Drawing on the motifs of the garden or the mother, the essay examines how the protagonist of the stor…

  • Staging martyrdom in the trial of El Niño de La Guardia

    A Duque•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2016•References: 4

The ritual sacrifice of the child of La Guardia in 1491 can be seen as a lens to examine anti-Jewish sentiment in fifteenth-century Castile. This article argues that the deposition made by the Jews of La Guardia hinged on a triple set of interpretations that tended to represent the sacrifice of the child of La Guardia as a mockery of pig-slaughtering sacrifices but also as a representation of Jewish medical malpractice. The article further connec…
