  • The ordinary lives of crisis: Transformations in the realm of work in South Africa and Romania

    Alina-Sandra Cucu, Bridget Kenny•ARTICLE•History and Technology•2023

2020 emerged as a ‘crisis in the world of work’. Reflections upon how the pandemic would accelerate pervasive joblessness and changes in the workplace abounded, while academics and technocrats alike have translated its predicaments as a catalyst for a rapidly coming postwork future. Using illustrative vignettes from our own work on labour in South Africa and Romania, we discuss how the current labour/technology crisis has moved along structural a…

  • Going West: Socialist flexibility in the long 1970s

    Open Access•Alina-Sandra Cucu•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2022

This article analyses some of the transformations in economic vocabularies, practices, and institutions that accompanied the turn towards high value-added and technology-driven industrialization in late socialist Romania. It investigates the challenges posed by increasing integration of the country’s commodity production into the world market in the 1960–70s and assesses the measures adopted by its economic executives as a response to these chall…

  • Socialist Accumulation and Its “Primitives” in Romania

    Open Access•Alina-Sandra Cucu•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2022•References: 3

Drawing on the Romanian case, this article argues against looking at state socialist regimes through the lens of exceptionalism, and assesses the merits of analysing them from the perspective of primitive accumulation. Integrating socialist projects into a longer history of modernization, capital formation, and struggles over labour and land allows me to develop a four-step argument about primitive socialist accumulation in Romania. First, I argu…

  • For a New Global Labour History: A View from Eastern Europe

    Open Access•Alina-Sandra Cucu•ARTICLE•HISTOREIN•2020•References: 9

This article investigates the recent attempts to integrate Eastern Europe in global labour history as a unique opportunity to formulate an intellectual agenda that would place the region on the global map, but on its own analytical terms. Based on two interconnected research projects on industrial labour in socialist Romania, it argues that these integration efforts have to start with a systematic endeavour to bring labour history and the history…

  • Producing knowledge in productive spaces: Ethnography and planning in early socialist Romania

    Alina-Sandra Cucu•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 22

My paper explores the forms of knowledge which laid the ground for the first economic plans of Romanian socialism, between 1949 and 1955. Building on factory and local Party Committee documents from the city of Cluj archives, I focus on processes of knowledge production within the space of the factory, following industrial management as a fundamental dimension of the exercise of state power in socialism. Against James Scott's concept of ‘legibili…
