  • The Academic Career of Ausonius

    Alan Booth, Alan D Booth•ARTICLE•Phoenix•1982•Cited by: 1

A USONIUS' LIFE spanned most of the fourth century. Educated at Bordeaux and Toulouse, and perhaps Auch, he taught in his native Bordeaux from the mid 330s to the mid 360s, when he was summoned to court to tutor Gratian. He was honoured with the title comes, the office of quaestor sacri palatii and praetorian prefect, and finally the consulship. These main facts are clearly attested and undisputed. Alan Booth, Alan D Booth•ARTICLE•Phoenix•1981•Cited by: 1

JEROME, it appears, completed his studies at Rome in summer 366.1 He then went to Trier where he decided to pursue the ascetic way. His departure from the West has not been placed before 3722 nor his actual retreat before 374.3 Yet there is immediate cause to question this dating. In the prologue to In Epist. ad Gal. 3 Jerome refers thus…

    Alan Booth, Alan D Booth•ARTICLE•Phoenix•1979•Cited by: 1

A T In Abacuc 2, 3.14 (= CCSL 76A.645.1010 ff.) Jerome states that he was a boy studying grammatice when the death of Julian the Apostate was announced. Since he should have been no older than sixteen at this point in his schooling, F. Cavallera reasoned that he was born at the earliest in 347.1 But if this is correct, Jerome then dubs himself senex when he was no older than forty (Vita Malchi 10 = PL 23 [1883] col. 62; dated 386/7). Such prematu…
