Memory methodology as post-apartheid atrocity prevention: The District Six Museum
This article examines the role of civil society organizations in mass atrocity prevention through a case study of the District Six Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. Drawing on interviews, field observations, and archival documents, we analyze how the Museum operates both as a memory site and engages in community organizing activities with atrocity prevention effects. Its distinctive “memory methodology” centers the voices of former District Six …
More Than an Opioid Crisis: Population Health and Economic Indicators Influencing Deaths of Despair
Using a pooled cross-section regression, the study analyzes state-level data on deaths of despair as a function of population health, economic, and demographic indicators identified in the academic literature. There is an urgent need to identify and address factors associated with suicides and deaths attributed to the use of alcohol, opioids, and other drugs and referred to as deaths of despair. According to provisional death data posted on the C…
An Alternative Approach to Teaching about NGOs Globally: A Comparative Country-Based View Seen through a Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention Lens
This paper describes a comparative approach to teaching Introduction to Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) in a master’s-level professional degree program. The approach addresses the challenge created due to significant differences in the NGO sector from country to country. This comparative approach utilizes a focus on five countries in different regions of the world, and partnerships with a community-based NGO in each country that addresses th…
Chao Guo and Gregory D. Saxton: The Quest for Attention: Nonprofit Advocacy in a Social Media Age
If the level of activity I see on my Twitter timeline by fellow academics is any indication, new research on the quest for attention on social media should be of particular interest to many pandemic-constrained scholars like me, whose recent work and personal lives have been defined by social distancing, working and teaching from home, conferences made virtual, and related frustrations. For those of you so defined, the arrival of The Quest for At…
Informal Giving in Turkey
Scholarly research about philanthropy has de-emphasized informal giving to friends, neighbors and others in need. Yet, informal giving is a critical element of philanthropy, particularly in settings with less well-developed civil society institutions. This paper examines informal giving in Turkey, based on two surveys of Turkish citizens conducted in 2004 and 2015. The surveys find much higher levels of informal giving than formal giving, though …
Giving Behavior in Turkey: Determinants of Individual Donations and Volunteering
This paper shares the results of a recent study about the giving of donations or time (volunteering) among citizens of Turkey. It examines the determinants of giving in light of recent research on this topic from other countries. We find level of education and institutional trust to be positively associated with giving, particularly to civil society organizations. In contrast to other studies, age is not associated with giving and men give at a h…
Looking for Friends, Fans, and Followers? Social Media Use in Public and Nonprofit Human Services
This article uses interviews and Internet data to examine social media use among nonprofit organizations and county departments involved in the delivery of human services in a six‐county area in south‐central New York State. Social media use was modest, with nonprofit organizations much more likely to use it than county departments. Organizations used social media primarily to market organizational activities, remain relevant to key constituencie…
‘All have to live in me …’: A study of the use of English alongside other African languages in a Kenyan school
The purpose of this paper, which builds on an earlier paper published in this Journal (Vol. 20, No. 6), is to develop the discussion around how English has been taught, used and perceived in Kenya, using data gathered from a small second-level English-medium school in Kenya. The complex relationships between language and identity are at work in the everyday routines of both staff and pupils within such a context. The paper seeks to set out a clea…
English in Kenyan education
This paper intends not only to place English language teaching in Kenya within a specific historical context, but also to consider how it operates alongside the many other languages used in the day‐to‐day experiences of a secondary school community. Any consideration of the use of English in Kenya must take into account the legacy of language policies adopted by both colonial and independent administrations in the country. Use is made in this res…
Stand by Me: Organization Founding in the Aftermath of Disaster
Over 250 new nonprofit organizations were founded in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. This study explores the characteristics of those organizations, the role they played and founders' motivations. The creation of new organizations is compared to the Disaster Resource Center's typology of organized responses to disaster. The study finds that classification of the organized response to recovery efforts following 9/11 requires a differe…

Monody
Monody or solo song was the product of sixth-century poets living in the Aegean islands. The most remarkable were Sappho and Alcaeus of Lesbos and Anacreon and Ibycus at the court of Polycrates in Samos. The poetry was distinguished by its metre, dialect and subject matter and by the conditions of its performance from elegiac and iambic verse on the one hand and choral lyric on the other. The poets used short stanzas in a variety of metres, and s…
The Golden Lyre: The Themes of the Greek Lyric Poets
Selections from Pindar
This book aims to fill a major gap. There was an obvious need for an English-language Pindar commentary for students which could take account of recent work. Gildersleeve, still available, is excellent, but Pindaric criticism has changed much in recent years. Farnell is good but scrappy, Fennell sensible but unimaginative, Bury imaginative but often wild, and all are out of print. K. begins with a brief introduction to Pindar's life and poetry, i…

The Megara (Moschus IV)
The cologne archilochus: ‘A Beard Coming’
There is no agreement about the supplement at the end of the first line. almost certainly refers to marriage, discussion of which is postponed till something becomes black or turns dark. Theiler's (‘solange mir das Haar noch schwarz ist’) hardly fits thecontext, and Burkert's with the sense ‘when the grapes ripen’ (‘jetzt ist Frühling’) is not convincing. A metaphorical sense for ‘grapes’ is preferable, e.g. or, better, (Ebert-Luppe), (Slings), ‘…
