Topography and Population of Ancient Boiotia
The Classical Foundations of Modern Historiography
The Ancient Roads of Southeastern Lucania
The area under study comprises the southeastern section of Lucania bounded on the north by the high land separating the Bradano and Basento valleys, on the south by the Agri River, on the west approximately by a line from Vaglio to Grumento and on the east by a line from Tursi to Miglionico. This paper forms a part of a general survey of the ancient routes of Lucania and Apulia. The literary sources offer in the area under consideration very limi…
The Ancient Roads of Eastern Lucania
The area under study comprises primarily the eastern section of Lucania south of the stretch of the Via Appia from Gravina to Venosa (Fig. 1); the purpose is to examine the network of principal ancient roads (Fig. 3). The literary sources, ancient and medieval, offer …

The Via Herculia is known as such solely through inscriptions. Their contents show that it was made a via publica by the time of Diocletian and Maximia…

THE CULTURE of the Middle Helladic period, that is, the culture of the Greek mainland from 1900 to 1550 B.C., has been the subject of increasing interest during the past few years for several reasons. First, such excavations as those at Lerna, Argos, and Kirrha have added enough to the archaeological evidence to justify more detailed study of this period. Second, the decipherment of Linear B as a Greek dialect has made it more likely that the Gre…
