  • Claudian and the interpretation of the wolf prodigy in De Bello Getico

    Étienne Wolff•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2025

The De bello Getico is a speech Claudian gave in Rome in June-July 402 to celebrate Stilicho's Roman victory over Alaric's Goths at Pollentia on 6 April. Various prodigies had occurred before the battle. But it was the wonder of the two wolves that most terrified the Romans. Claudian himself gives an interpretation of this miracle, which no other source tells us about, certainly to counter other less favorable interpretations. And he dwells on th…

    Open Access•Étienne Wolff•ARTICLE•Cahiers « Mondes anciens•2025

Ausonius' poetry is marked by a great deal of formal research, which takes five main aspects: metrical virtuosity, Latin-Greek bilingualism, centon, games on words, lexical elaboration. It is this last point that will hold our attention here. If the language of Ausonius is generally consistent with the classi- cal standards from the point of view of the syntax, it is not exactly the same for the lexicon. Ausonius sometimes uses late words and/or …

  • Martial and Campania

Étienne Wolff•CHAPTER•Campania in the Flavian Poetic…•2019

The Roman resort of Baiae with its luxurious amenities, absence of social constraints, and the inevitable notoriety of ruined reputations was a tempting target for epigram. This chapter explores the extent of Martial’s personal experience of Baiae and his ambiguous image of the resort, through the content and dates of particular epigrams. Despite the sharp wit and wide-ranging ingenuity with which he presents his considerable knowledge of the spa…

  • Allegorical interpretations of Hera-Juno at the end of Antiquity

    Étienne Wolff•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2017

The allegorical interpretations of pagan gods flourished in late Antiquity. They were the work of the pagans, who thus sought to spiritualize their religion, but also of some Christians, who thought that the pagan fables were hiding truths they needed to discover. The goddess Hera-Juno has not escaped the phenomenon. Here we consider, taking as one basis the works of Fabius Planciades Fulgentius, African writer of the fifth-sixth century, what th…

  • The image of Augustus in the work of Sidonius Apollinaris

    Étienne Wolff•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2015

We found in the work in prose and verse of Sidonius Apollinaris (5th century) a few number of brief allusions to Augustus, and it comes to him in detail in the preface of Majorien’s Panegyric ( Poems IV) and, indirectly, in the dedicatory poem of the same Panegyric ( Poems III). We here consider for what purpose Sidonius refers to Augustus, how he is presented, and what are the qualities that are highlighted. It appears that his relations with Vi…

Ausonius and Macrobius reflect both the positive image enjoyed by Augustus in the fourth century. They also illustrate the importance of Suetonius in Late Antiquity. The manner in which Ausone shows Augustus is not original. On the other hand Macrobius’Augustus, who is neither affected nor hieratic and supports mockery, implicitly contrasts by his conduct to the solemnity of the ceremony surrounding the emperors of the Lower Empire

  • Retour Sur La Datation Et l'Origine De Lactantius Placidus, Commentateur De Stace

    Étienne Wolff•ARTICLE•Phoenix•2010

This paper discusses the question of the dating of Lactantius Placidus and his Commentum to the Thebaid of Statius, and proposes to place it between 410 (or a little later) and 468.
