THE VICTORY Of Thebans over Spartans at Leuctra in 371 must have been almost as sensational as Athenian victory at Marathon, or that won by allies at Salamis. Cicero said that victorious general at Leuctra, Epaminondas, was on lips of Greeks but Epicureans,' but if that was so in Cicero's day it had not always been true.
