The Hellenistic Forts on the Euphrates in Syria and Jebel Khalid
This chapter outlines the fortifications along the Syrian Euphrates during the Hellenistic period, designed to control and monitor river traffic and to protect the strategic corridor between the twin Seleucid capitals of Antioch in the west and Seleukeia-on-the-Tigris in the east. The major sites explored are Apameia-on-the-Euphrates, Jerablous on the former Hittite site of Carchemish, Tell al-Hajj and Tell Sheikh Hassan, Jazla, and Jebel Khalid.…
Third-century Christianity
This chapter explains the geographical coverage of Christianity in the third century. It deals with Christians relations with the Roman state and the persecutions which formed a backdrop to the mental lives of many Christians even if physically they may have been little affected by them. The chapter describes the literary and intellectual life of third-century Christianity. Persecution of Christians by Roman officials had been in the course of th…

Two Christians in the Familia Caesaris
There are, notoriously, a number of general literary observations on the large number of Christians in Caesar's household and in Caesar's employ in the late second and in the third centuries A.D. but there are remarkably few particular examples to substantiate these general claims. Particularly rare (for reasons of security?) are traces of such individual Christians outside the literary remains. C.I.L . 6.8987 (= Diehl I.L.C.V . 3872) would appea…
The Historical Setting of the Octavius of Minucius Felix
The Date of the Oration of Tatian
It is some years since Professor R. M. Grant published in this review an article on the above topic [46(1953), 99ff.]. In it he advanced an attractively neat and confident case for solving the long-debated question of the dating of Tatian's Oration . It was written, he concludes, “after the year 176, perhaps in 177 or 178,” and this conclusion he draws from straightforward internal evidence: Or. 23.2 alludes to events of 172/3, 19.1 to those of 1…
