  • Exposure of Individuals in Europe to Air Pollution and Related Health Effects

Open Access•Naixin Li, Rainer Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Air pollutants, especially PM2.5 and NO 2 , are associated with adverse health impacts, as shown by numerous epidemiological studies. In these studies, the observed health impacts have been correlated with ambient concentrations, mainly taken from air pollution monitoring stations. However, individuals are harmed by the pollutants in the inhaled air at the places where they stay, and thus, the concentration of pollutants in the inhaled air is obv…

  • Postoral Homer

    Rainer Friedrich•BOOK•Postoral Homer•2019

Milman Parry’s comparative study of Homer and Southslavic oral song had demonstrated the existence of an oral tradition behind and within the Homeric Epic, thus establishing an indisputable link between Homer and oral poetry. Yet its exact nature has remained a moot point. For equally indisputable is the fact of the coexistence of oral and literate features within the Homeric Epic. Thus not behaving as either a straight oral song or as a straight…

  • Theodicy

    Open Access•Rainer Friedrich•CHAPTER•2011

Is there divine justice in the Homeric epics that justifies the ways of Gods to men? Zeus' speech in the divine Assembly opening the epic action of the Odyssey (1.32–43) answers it in the affirmative: it has been described as the “oldest Greek theodicy” (Jaeger 1966, 84). This speech, given its speaker and its position, is clearly programmatic, outlining the theological and moral outlook that informs the epic action of the poem. Rejecting a view …

    Rainer Friedrich•ARTICLE•Telos•1977

In the antithetical tables ‘dramatic versus epic theatre’ from the notes to Mahagonny, the translator used the felicitous term montage (epic) as opposition to growth (dramatic). ‘Montage’ is often used by Brecht to contrast modern with traditional art; moreover, this term brings out clearly the close affinity of Brecht's epic theatre to film and points in particular to the cinematographic construction of his dramatic actions: “As we have seen, th…
