    Open Access•Johannes Hahn•CHAPTER•Kindlers Literatur Lexikon (KLL)•2020

  • The Challenge of Religious Violence

    Open Access•Johannes Hahn•CHAPTER•Contested Monarchy•2015

For centuries, the phenomenon of religious violence was virtually unknown to the Roman empire: Roman officials understood the “persecution” and condemnation of Christians as necessary for maintaining law and order. They would have been at a loss if they had had to document cases of religious violence in their districts, just as members of the imperial consilium would also have been puzzled by such reports. Historians today—in contrast to early Ch…

  • The Veneration of the Maccabean Brothers in Fourth Century Antioch

Johannes Hahn•CHAPTER•Dying for the Faith, Killing for…•2012

This chapter analyses the strand of Maccabean tradition, namely, the veneration of the Maccabean martyrs in late antique Syrian Antioch, results from a threefold process of usurpation and reinterpretation. Firstly, the designation of the seven brothers and their mother as Maccabees, who one after the other suffer terrible martyrdoms at the hands of the tyrant Antiochus IV Epiphanes in emulation of the venerable Eleazar, lacks any foundation: ther…

  • Graffiti

    Open Access•Johannes Hahn•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

The term is derived from the Italian word sgraffiato (“scratched“), and conventionally used for any kind of text or drawing scratched, scrawled, painted, or marked in any manner on material not primarily designed for writing (such as wax tablets) with a sharp object – although sometimes chalk, coal, or paint were used ( dipinti, tituli picti; their inclusion is sometimes questioned, but practical and analytical reasons would suggest their use).

  • Canusium Album

    Open Access•Johannes Hahn•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

This bronze tablet (66×74 cm) ( CIL IX 338 = ERCanosa I 35) comprises the complete list of the ordo decurionum of Canusium (Apulia) as revised by the duoviri quinquennales M. Antonius Priscus and L. Annius Secundus in 223 CE and presumably displayed in the Forum.

  • Epigraphic habit

    Open Access•Johannes Hahn•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

The concept of the epigraphic habit claims to contextualize epigraphic evidence, to reconstruct distinct epigraphic cultures, and to interpret their meaning along historical, social, and cultural lines.

The Oxford Handbook of Social Relations in the Roman World synthesizes what has been accomplished in this field and attempts to configure the examination of Roman social relations in some new ways, thereby indicating directions in which the discipline might now proceed. The book opens with a substantial general introduction that portrays the current state of the field, indicates some avenues for further study, and provides the background necessar…

  • Statistical Method and Inheritance of the Consulate under the Early Roman Empire

    Johannes Hahn, Paul M M Leunissen•ARTICLE•Phoenix•1990

A SENATOR'S LIFE under the early Empire certainly offered its comforts, but will hardly have been without perils. The history of this period, on record mainly from the pens of senators, is replete with accounts of political trials, exiles, executions, and forced suicides, all by imperial fiat. Still, the cases explicitly mentioned must represent only a portion of the politically motivated persecution of senators, for an emperor's saevitia was pre…
