Pompey is a major figure for Cassius Dio. In the imperial period he was remembered as one of the founders of the empire, and Dio presents him as a critical figure in the period of dynasteia that preceded the monarchy of Augustus, some elements of which are prefigured by Pompey’s position after 67 BCE. This chapter explores Caesar’s Bellum Gallicum to discuss when and why the commentaries were written in the final form. This chapter offers an analysis of how inscriptions can complement the narratives of Roman history from the third century BCE to the third century CE provided in literary sources. They reveal certain historical events or details that would otherwise be unknown, and they supplement the information offered by the surviving Roman historians .
