  • A man to remember: Two film adaptations of Kokoro

    K Kato•ARTICLE•Journal of Japanese and Korean…•2021

This paper investigates two film adaptations of Kokoro, one by Ichikawa Kon in 1955 and the other by Shindō Kaneto in 1973, to uncover transformations of male bonding in different contexts. Responding to the new libidinal economy of the Meiji era, Sōseki’s novel envisions the heteronormative future while corporeal desire between men is relegated to the past. The Meiji reconfiguration of sexuality and male bonding is transcoded to the 1950s post-w…

  • Kissing off the Defeat: Cross-Dressing as the Japanese Postwar Condition in Oitsu Owaretsu

    K Kato•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2021•References: 11

This paper focuses on cross-dressing performances in Yūzō Kawashima's Oitsu Owaretsu (1946), and the postwar socio-political conditions in which the text was released. The film is known for offering the very first kiss scene in a history of Japanese cinema. Produced under the strict censorship by the Occupation force, however, a kiss is not just a kiss, but represents Americanism, masculinity, and heterosexuality. This is significant as a vital p…

  • A Man with Whom Men Fall in Love: Homosociality and Effeminophobia in the Abashiri Bangai-chi Series

    K Kato•ARTICLE•Japanese Studies•2020•References: 3

This paper focuses on ninkyō eiga (the chivalry film) and especially the Abashiri Bangai-chi series to examine politics of effeminacy in the masculinist film genre. Unlike conventional ninkyō eiga in which any corporeal intimacy between the men is negated, the Abashiri Bangai-chi series is subversive in a way that it acknowledges the sexual intimacy in a male-dominated environment. Particularly, effeminate characters are employed as comic relief …

The incidences of these traits were compared with the incidences in…

  • The Search for the Origin of Bitumen Excavated From Archaeological Sites in the Northernmost Island in Japan by Means of Statistical Analysis of Fi–ms Data

    Open Access•K Kato, A MIYAO et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2008•References: 5

The origin of bitumen excavated from archaeological sites in Hokkaido, the northernmost island in Japan, was sought by means of field‐ionization mass spectrometry (FI–MS) and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS) of the hydrocarbon components. The field‐ionization mass spectra were decomposed by Z‐numbers into several components, where the Z‐number refers to z in the formula C n H 2n+z . This is equivalent to the deficit number of H atom…
