The Evolution of Critical Paradigms in Israeli Feminist Scholarship
This article aims to develop a theoretical model of the evolution of Israeli feminist scholarship in the last three decades. This model focuses on critical disciplinary discourses that deconstruct existing institutional and academic frameworks in the interest of social and cultural change. I insist here on feminist critical inquiry, the critique of the nation, and the critique of knowledge as emerging consistent concerns in all three phases of it…

Reclaiming the Hebrew Bible for Women
In this essay, Esther Fuchs analyzes and critiques the resurgence in the past decade of neoliberal feminist recuperations of the Hebrew Bible. This approach is essentialist, ignores the mediation of patriarchal ideology, tends to reauthorize the "fathers" of the field, and is generally dismissive of feminist critique. Fuchs traces the roots of this approach to Elizabeth Cady Stanton's The Woman's Bible, which was largely grounded in the humanist,…

Images of Women in Holocaust Films
The question of the role of women in Holocaust Studies has been raised in the last decade with increasing eloquence and urgency. This article considers the role of women in Holocaust films. It argues that in numerous major cinematographic representations of the Holocaust (e.g., The Holocaust, Schindler's List, Europa Europa, Shoah ) women are portrayed as vicarious victims of the Holocaust. They suffer as the wives and mothers of men who are dire…
The Enemy as Woman
The Enemy as Woman: Fictional Women in the Literature of the Palmach* Esther Fuchs (bio) The literature that spanned the first decade of Israel’s statehood (1948–1958) is known in Hebrew literary criticism as “the Generation of 1948” [Dor Tashah] or as the Palmach Generation [Dor haPalmach]. 1 While the former term refers to the year in which Israel fought its War of Independence and was proclaimed a sovereign state, the latter refers to the assa…
Labor Zionism in Cultural, Historical, and Political Perspective
Yaron Ezrahi, Robert Littell, Shimon Peres, and Myron J. Aronoff offer varying assessments of cultural, historical, and political aspects of Labor Zionism. They differ in purpose and tone. Aronoff’s scholarly analysis offers an anthropological approach to political processes and procedures in the Labor Party, brilliantly depicted as symbolic actions that often stifle rather than inspire a genuine and democratic debate. Broader in scope, Ezrahi’s …
Women and Jewish Studies
The presence of feminist inquiry and debate is making itself increasingly visible in the field of Jewish studies. The books under consideration attest to a growing interest in women and gender as an object of study and as a theoretical principle that might revise the entire academic agenda of the field of Jewish studies. While the first three books deal with interdisciplinary and supradisciplinary approaches to Jewish studies, the fourth deals sp…

Ironic Characterization in the Works of S. Y. Agnon
[Reb Zevi] saw and realized that the business was leading [Reb Issachar] astray, that he was being distracted by it and was distracting others, until finally he felt like one tugged by a distorted idea, a senseless bit of sophistry or vain embellishment, like one who becomes increasingly bogged down as he trudges from one pilpul to the next, from one piece of vanity to the next, until it finally drags him into a morass from which he can never eme…
