  • Analysis of Minute and Priceless Artifacts Using Scanning Electron Microscopy

    Open Access•Peter Warnock, Michael W Pendleton et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•1991•Referências: 13

Analyzing minute remains, delicate objects, or components of priceless artifacts is often difficult. An example of the difficulties encountered in analyzing these types of artifacts is seen in the wood analysis of a wooden writing tablet (diptych), recovered from a 14th century B.C. submerged shipwreck. Because only minute fragments of the diptych were available for analysis, we utilized a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to obtain high resolut…

  • The Wood of the Ulu Burun Diptych

    Open Access•Peter Warnock, Michael W Pendleton et al.•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1991•Citada por: 7•Referências: 3

In the fall of 1988, Cemal Pulak, acting field director and assistant director of the Ulu Burun excavations, asked the authors to identify the wood used in the diptych found on the fourteenth- or very early thirteenth-century Ulu Burun shipwreck. Although it has been stated generally that Greco-Roman writing tablets were made of boxwood, other woods were also used for writing tablets in various periods of antiquity. The second oldest known writin…

  • A Comment concerning “Testing Flotation Recovery Rates

    Open Access•Michael W Pendleton•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1983•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Since carbonized seed species differ in buoyancy characteristics, and since certain conditions may cause carbonized seeds to become nonbuoyant, the use of both buoyant and nonbuoyant modern carbonized seed species as a recovery standard is suggested in order to provide a more representative measure of flotation device effectiveness. Recovery standards utilizing modern carbonized seeds should be viewed as probable, rather than absolute, determinat…

  • A Flotation Apparatus for Archaeological Sites

    Michael W Pendleton•ARTICLE•KIVA•1979•Referências: 1

A polypropylene flotation tank suitable for retrieval of floral and faunal materials in the field is described. The operation of the tank is based on a fluid medium and on a bubbler unit which acts to separate small materials from their soil matrix with little damage. Once separated, materials are passed through graduated screens determining size variation of remains within samples, thereby facilitating identification
