  • Innovation and Transformation in International Studies

Open Access•Enrico Augelli, Richard Falk et al.•BOOK•Innovation and Transformation in…•1997

This book explores the nature of, and conditions for, theoretical innovation in international studies. Highlighting classic and new research problems, this collection of critically minded, original essays pushes international relations scholarship in uncharted directions. Bridging social theory and international relations theory, it searches for sources of intellectual innovation in the everyday lives of ordinary people. The seventeen contributor…

  • Ecology, political economy and the counter-movement: Karl Polanyi and the second great transformation

    Open Access•Mitchell Bernard•CHAPTER•Innovation and Transformation in…•1997

This chapter examines the contribution of Karl Polanyi to a critical theory of ecological political economy. It is argued that whilst Polanyi's work contains significant ambiguities over questions of political agency – for example, his arguments sometimes seem to invoke a form of technological determinism – other aspects of his writing contain theoretical innovations that enable a richer and deeper understanding of the limits and contradictions o…

  • Beyond Product Cycles and Flying Geese: Regionalization, Hierarchy, and the Industrialization of East Asia

    Open Access•Mitchell Bernard, John Ravenhill•ARTICLE•World Politics•1995•Cited by: 116•References: 19

Product cycle theory as expressed in the analogy of flying geese has become a widely accepted way of conceptualizing industrial diffusion across East Asia. As the product cycle is repeated for increasingly sophisticated products, so, it is argued, the development trajectory of Japan will be replicated in a succession of sectors and countries. This approach fails, however, to capture the complexities of the contemporary regionalization of industri…
