  • Beyond deterrence

    Open Access•Kyungkook Kang, Jacek Kugler•ARTICLE•Conflict Management and Peace…•2023•References: 18

This paper identifies profound contradictions within and across nuclear deterrence strategies that evolved in response to the proliferation and modernization of nuclear weapons. To reconcile theory with practice, we summarize the theoretical assumptions and implications of nuclear strategy. Informed by these discussions, we develop a decision-theoretic model of deterrence based on power transition theory. We explore conditions for the stability o…

  • Relative political capacity

Open Access•Ali Fisunoğlu, Kyungkook Kang et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict Management and Peace…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Measuring the ability of governments to implement policy remains one of the most significant questions of political science. This paper presents the latest iteration of the Relative Political Capacity (RPC) dataset and introduces the Absolute Political Capacity measure. It then investigates the trends in political performance measures across time and space, and different political and economic characteristics. Covering 168 countries from 1960 to …

  • Super Continent

    Open Access•Kyungkook Kang•ARTICLE•Political Science Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 1

The argument outlined in this book casts a clear focus on the transformation of Eurasia—where British intellectual Sir Halford Mackinder first placed the pivotal position on the global landscape before the outbreak of World War I. According to Mackinder’s view, whichever great power controlled the core of Eurasia, referred to as the “heartland,” would dominate the globe subsequently. Mackinder’s metaphorical lecture has not proven right throughou…

  • Assessment of deterrence and missile defense in East Asia

    Open Access•Kyungkook Kang, Jacek Kugler•ARTICLE•International Area Studies Review•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This paper explores the stability of deterrence in East Asia and the effects of missile defense on regional security. In particular, we evaluate the policy implications derived from the power transition perspective for the development of the US missile defense system in the Asia-Pacific region. Over the short term, we anticipate that the stability of deterrence in East Asia will be increased by the deployment of ballistic missile defenses that cr…

  • Demographic and Economic Consequences of Conflict

    Open Access•Tadeusz Kugler, Kyungkook Kang et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 32

Research on conflict traditionally focuses on its initiation, duration, and severity, but seldom on its consequences. Yet, demographic and economic recovery from the consequences of war lasts far longer and may be more devastating than the waging war. Our concern is with war losses and post-war recovery leading to convergence with pre-war performance. To test this proposition, we choose the most severe international and civil wars after 1920. We …

  • In Search of Structure

    Mark Abdollahian, Kyungkook Kang•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Power Transitions (PT) anticipates interstate conflict or cooperation by examining dynamic changes in the distribution of power across the international system, as well as each nation's (or politically “relevant” nation's) satisfaction with the current international status quo. Using a system of symmetric, coupled nonlinear differential equations, we formalize and test a dynamic PT model to identify to what extent and degree policy makers can mai…
