Margins and Political Messaging
This mixed-methods study, grounded in the "ambition on the margins" framework, examines the political socialization and mobilization of Black female college students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Southeastern United States. Surveys and focus groups with 80 self-identified Black female undergraduates explored two research questions: How do these students engage politically? and What motivates their participation? Findings …
Deficit-Oriented Beliefs, Anti-Black Policies, Punitive Practices, and Labeling
Background/Context: Embedded in “common sense” and state-mandated reforms to close “the achievement gap,” the urban school, especially those sites with a no-excuses orientation to learning, can produce and reproduce the carceral state in students’ lives. The seemingly innocuous policies and processes limit access to educational opportunities and create disproportionate out-of-class time, which can emerge as the connective tissue for criminalizati…
Why Don’t You See Me
Black male students throughout the United States encounter a variety of school, community, and familial stressors. This includes exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) which impacts their socio-emotional growth and academic outcomes. For this reason, the article explores extant literature and offers actionable steps to prepare preservice teachers to meet the needs of Black male students. Specially, the author 1) explores the challenges …
Deconstructing the Challenges Black Male Preservice Teachers Encounter in Rural Schools
Nationally, school districts and postsecondary institutions are developing and implementing a variety of initiatives to close the teacher diversity gap. Unfortunately, only 20% of teachers are from ethnic and racial backgrounds, yet schools educate majority-minority populations. More troubling, less than 2% of teachers are Black males. Overall, Black male preservice teachers encounter misconceptions and stereotypes, which impact their student tea…
Exploring the transition experiences of one black male refugee pre-service teacher at a HBCU
Purpose There is limited discussion in the teacher education literature about the experiences of pre-service black male teachers generally and the ethnic diversity among black male pre-service teachers specifically. Thus, this paper aims to explore the experiences of Frank, a black male refugee health education major attending an historically black college and university (HBCU). Design/methodology/approach This research study is theoretically gui…
Reshaping the Japanese Novel in English Translation
The study of literature in translation has been a key component of Translation Studies since the field emerged more than half a century prior. One of the defining moments in the field was a shift in focus from comparing a source text with its translation to looking at the translation in a target culture. Another development that is growing in importance is a focus on the translator and how other individuals may use their agency to influence the f…
Perspectives on Team Teaching by Students and Teachers
The number of English language instructors from abroad working in Japan's secondary schools increases yearly. Research shows that during the years since the introduction of team teaching, a number of yet to be resolved classroom issues have persisted. Japanese teachers of English (JTEs) and native speaker assistant English teachers (AETs) appear to be in touch with their students' needs, but at the same time are more inclined to see their roles a…
Woodrow Wilson, Progressive Reform, and Public Administration
It is fast becoming fashionable today to bad-mouth contributions of scholar-president Woodrow Wilson to American public administration. To be sure, everyone acknowledges that his 1887 essay, The Study of Administration, published in Political Science Quarterly, was a significant starting point of some kind. 1 For example, Leonard D. White, preeminent public-administration scholar of pre-World War II era, wrote that the study of administration . .…
