The making of a sub‐discipline: State initiatives and the production of British geographical studies of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, 1945–71
This paper explores the origins of British geographical studies of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, in particular the ways in which this sub‐discipline was shaped by state‐led initiatives after the Second World War, emerging as a small yet distinct area of geographical practice within UK universities. Ukraine’s diverging space-economy: The Orange Revolution, post-soviet development models and regional trajectories
This paper considers the evolution of Ukraine’s space-economy from 1990 to 2009, paying particular attention to comparative regional economic performance during the country’s expansionary phase from 1999 to 2008. This shows that Ukraine inherited from the Imperial and Soviet eras a space-economy that was amongst the most unbalanced in Europe. Furthermore post-Soviet regional trajectories intensified these territorial imbalances. The paper argues …
Geographically touring the eastern bloc: British geography, travel cultures and the Cold War
This paper considers the role of travel in the generation of geographical knowledge of the eastern bloc by British geographers. Based on oral history and surveys of published work, the paper examines the roles of three kinds of travel experience: individual private travels, tours via state tourist agencies, and tours by academic delegations. Encountering soviet geography: Oral histories of British geographical studies of the USSR and Eastern Europe 1945–1991
This paper considers the history of British geographical studies of the USSR and Eastern Europe 1945-1991, presenting material from a research project which has included thirty-two oral history interviews. Oral history is an especially fruitful research methodology in this context due to the distinct issues of formality and informality involved in researching the Soviet bloc. This paper examines the geographical transfer of economic knowledge and practices from centres of neoliberalism in North America and Western Europe to post‐soviet Ukraine. The paper argues that a ‘transition industry’ emerged in the wake of the disintegration of the soviet system whose purpose was to realize economic transition in central and eastern Europe.
