  • The Nobility and the Long-Term Origins of the French Revolution

    Open Access•Timothy Tackett•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

This essay offers a series of brief reactions to Jonathan Dewald’s article. While underlining the importance of that article as a synthesis of recent research on the socioeconomic evolution of the French nobility during the last three centuries of the Old Regime, this comment questions to what degree it is helpful in explaining the putative “collapse” of the nobility in 1789 or the “framing” of the early Revolution.

  • The Work of Claude Langlois: An Overview

    Timothy Tackett•ARTICLE•Historical Reflections/Réflexions…•2013

This article is conceived as an overview of the career and scholarship of Claude Langlois. It emphasizes the breadth, diversity, and volume of his work, giving particular attention to four fields in which Langlois made especially important contributions. These fields to some extent mark four phases of his scholarly career-although not necessarily in chronological order. These are historical religious sociology, the French Revolution, women and re…

  • Paths to Revolution: The Old Regime Correspondence of Five Future Revolutionaries

    Timothy Tackett•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2009•Cited by: 2

This study is based on a close reading of five of the relatively rare series of correspondence by future revolutionaries written during the ten to twenty years preceding 1789. It seeks to determine at what point these individuals began to make critical judgments about the political situation in the kingdom and to think of themselves as potential political players. It also asks what influences—cultural, social, political, or other—were most import…

  • The Cambridge History of Christianity

    Open Access•Stewart J Brown, Timothy Tackett•BOOK•Enlightenment, reawakening and…•2006

During the tumultuous period of world history from 1660 to 1815, three complex movements combined to bring a fundamental cultural reorientation to Europe and North America, and ultimately to the wider world. The Enlightenment transformed views of nature and of the human capacity to master nature. The religious reawakenings brought a revival of heart-felt, experiential Christianity. Finally revolution, the political and social upheavals of the lat…

  • When the King Took Flight

Timothy Tackett•BOOK•When the King Took Flight•2004

On a June night in 1791, King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette fled Paris in disguise, hoping to escape the mounting turmoil of the French Revolution. They were arrested by a small group of citizens a few miles from the Belgian border and forced to return to Paris. Two years later they would both die at the guillotine. It is this extraordinary story, and the events leading up to and away from it, that Tackett recounts in gripping novelistic style. …

The author generally accepts Lefebvre's classic study of the latter. However, he puts into question the importance of belief in an ‘aristocratic plot’ in the inception of the Fear, arguing that it originated far more from belief in an imminent collapse of law an…

Until recently, with few exceptions, historians of the revolution have begun and ended with the events and philosophies of the capital. In this volume, however, the authors describe how men and women across France sometimes welcomed, often modified, but most often rejected policies emanating from Paris, thereby inflectin…

  • The Coming of the French Revolution

Georges Lefebvre, Timothy Tackett et al.•BOOK•Coming of the French Revolution•1971

The Coming of the French Revolution remains essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of this great turning point in the formation of the modern world. First published in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, and suppressed by the Vichy government, this classic work explains what happened in France in 1789, the first year of the French Revolution. Georges Lefebvre wrote history "from below"-a Marxist approach. Here, he places the…
