  • Computerized Grammars for Analysis and Machine Translation

    Pius Ten Hacken, Bengt Sigurd•ARTICLE•Language•1997

  • Analysis of Particle Verbs for Automatic Translation

    Open Access•Bengt Sigurd•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1995

A number of typical particle verbs in Swedish and English are presented and it is noted that such verbs are often forgotten in dictionaries and not given the proper treatment in grammars. One problem is the identification of these verbs, another is the fact that the verb and the particle may be separated by other words. The particle verbs must therefore be treated as discontinuous lexical items. It is shown that the phrase structure rules used in…

  • Using Referent Grammar (RG) in Computer Analysis, Generation and Translation of Sentences

    Open Access•Bengt Sigurd•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1988

The paper presents Referent Grammar (RG), a version of generalized phrase structure grammar. RG uses descriptive labels for defective categories (categories tacking a constituent) instead of slash expressions and needs no null (empty, zero) categories. RG uses both functional and categorial representations and the grammar rules, written in the Prolog DCG formalism, relate these two levels. The functional representations of RG include referent var…

  • Round numbers

    Open Access•Bengt Sigurd•ARTICLE•Language in Society•1988•References: 3

Numbers are used for exact and approximative estimations. The numbers used in approximative expressions are typically so-called round numbers, such as 10, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 100, 1,000, and such numbers are also very frequent in texts. This article presents evidence that some numbers are rounder than others and discusses how the roundness of a number can be derived from its contents of the base number of the numeral System of the culture. A form…

  • Commentator

    Open Access•Bengt Sigurd•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1982

The Commentator is a small-scale computer implementation of a model oftext production. The system simulates human behavior from the perceptionof events on a screen to the utterances. It is designed to allow anyone havingsome knowledge of Basic and access to a microcomputer to study the semantics of words (e.g. localization and movement predicates such asapproach, left/right, near, in front of, turn, overtake), pronouns, and sentence connectives s…

  • Maximum Rate and Minimal Duration of Repeated Syllables

    Open Access•Bengt Sigurd•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1973•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Among the interesting questions related to tongue-twisters is the question how fast syllables of different types can be repeated. A simple pilot experiment with strings of open syllables such as [tatata...], [stastasta...], [strastrastra ...] was carried out. Differences in the results are interpreted as being due to individual differences in motor skills and to differences in the phonetic material of the syllables. Two simple mathematical models…
