  • What Price a Living Wage

    Open Access•Doug Miller, Peter Williams•ARTICLE•Global Social Policy•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This article sets out to examine ways in which a living wage might be implemented in the global apparel sector. We argue that an increase in the unit labour cost element of the free on board price paid by brands by a factor equivalent to the difference between the existing wage and a nationally determined living wage figure would not impact in any serious way upon retailer/brand-owner's (or supplier's) bottom line. However, the existence of fragm…

  • Negotiating International Framework Agreements in the Global Textile, Garment and Footwear Sector

    Open Access•Doug Miller•ARTICLE•Global Social Policy•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 2

This article outlines the policy and practice of the International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers’ Federation (ITGLWF) with respect to multinationals in the sector. It concludes that while the multinational policy of the ITGLWF is in line with other global union federations, the negotiation of International Framework Agreements is proving to be a much harder objective to realize. This can, in part, be explained by an anti-union stance on th…

This theoretical article attempts to show that this conceptual confusion lies within the narrowness of approaches which address labour market inequalities from both an equality of opportunity and an equality of outcome perspective. The inability of these perspectives to sati…

  • The moan within the tone

    Open Access•Doug Miller•ARTICLE•Popular Music•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The tenor is a rhythm instrument and the best statements negroes have made of what their soul is have been on tenor saxophone. Now you think about it and you'll see I'm right. The tenor's got that thing, that honk, you can get to people with it. Sometimes you can be playing that tenor and I'm telling you the people want to jump across the rail. (Ornette Coleman
