    Jon Fitzgerald, Arianne Reis•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2016•References: 1

Despite the richness of Northeast Brazil’s musical culture, popular music from the region has received relatively little public and scholarly attention. This article, based on field research by the authors in 2012 and 2014, examines manifestations of Brazilian musical genres on the island of Fernando de Noronha—a pocket of concentrated musical activity within the Northeast state of Pernambuco. While musicians service the tourist market by offerin…

  • Human machine music

    Barry Hill, Jon Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•Perfect Beat•2013

This article presents a participant–observer documentation and analysis of creative practices among a group of contemporary Australian musicians working within the field of ‘live electronica’ (LE)—defined as electronic dance music (EDM) performed for an audience in real time by a group of musicians without the aid of machine/computer-controlled sound generation sequences. Australian LE emerged in the 1990s and went through a period of development…

  • Planes of illusion

    Jon Fitzgerald, P Hayward et al.•ARTICLE•Perfect Beat•2013

Mainstream commercial cinema’s increasing access to highly advanced computer-generated imagery (CGI) has allowed it to produce convincing evocations of places and experiences that increasingly blur the line between the represented ‘real’ of actual locations and digitally generated fictional spaces. This article discusses one such evocation: the spectacular cave system featured in the film Sanctum (2011), directed by Alister Grierson. The first pa…

  • Make ’em laugh, make ’em cry

    Jon Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•Perfect Beat•2009

This article examines the use of ‘production music’ in an Australian ‘reality TV’ programme, Nerds FC. Production music (or ’library music’) represents an important source of generic soundtrack material, and is created by musicians for specialist production music companies, who license the music for TV, film, radio and other media. Despite its pervasive presence, however, production music is a largely anonymous and undocumented area within screen…

Given his re‐emergence as a recording and concert artist after decades of illness and the recent fortieth anniversary (2006) of his best‐loved hit “Good Vibrations,” it seems timely to engage in a detailed examination of some of the work that established his reputation. This paper analyses all of Wilson's US Top 40 hits from 1963 …
