Sailing and Social Class
This book explores the sociology of sailing and yachting. Drawing on original research, and employing a theoretical framework based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, the book argues that sailing is, still, an upper-middle-class activity that has much to tell us about the wider sociology of leisure and sport. The book examines the historical foundations of blue-water sailing as established by naval and colonial shipping, to trace the roots of contem…

Between monarch and monarchy
This article examines debates related to the care and education of Louis-Charles,\ndauphin and heir to the French throne, in 1790 and 1791. It argues that these debates offer us valuable insight into revolutionary political culture during that period, especially regarding two important points. The first is the tension between traditional notions of kingship and sovereignty, on the one hand, and the rise of constitutionalism, on the other. This te…
‘Always Anangu—always enterprising’
As a result of primary research in Arnhem Land, Altman developed a hybrid economy model for Indigenous Australians living in remote areas in which people move between the state, market and customary sectors (Altman 2005). He asserts that development policies for remote areas based on the state and the market have failed because of the existence of a customary sector and very different intercultural value systems. In addition, he suggests the comm…
The Sociology of Youth Subcultures
The main theme in the sociology of youth subcultures is the reladon between social class and everyday experience. There are many ways of thinking about social class. In the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu the main factors involved are parents' occupation and level of education. These have signilicant effects on the life chances of their children. Social class is not a social group: the idea is not that working class kids or middle …
Punk and Globalization
Against theories of cultural globalization, this article argues that there are substantial inequities in the global flows of punk subculture between different parts of the world. The flows are unequal and unbalanced. The use of the internet contributes to this inequality rather than solving it. Drawing on ethnographic descriptions of the scenes in Mexico City and Barcelona, the article shows that there are considerable differences in access to pu…
Punk Subculture in Mexico and the Anti-globalization Movement
This article explores some strands of the current movement against capitalist globalization. It examines the affinity between punk subculture and autonomous politics taking the Mexican punk scene as an example. Based on participant observation it describes what Bourdieu would call the habitus of punk in Mexico. Recorded music, subcultural style and political ideas arrive into this habitus where they are selectively adopted. Thus, attempts to arti…

The eagle and the bird
This response to James Lull in the European Journal of Cultural Studies 1(3) introduces a wider range of Mexican and Latin American cultural studies and argues that Lull’s selection sidesteps issues of social and cultural conflict
Whos Emma and the Limits of Cultural Studies
Cultural studies is a response to political crisis: it is the institutional memory of failed revolutions. Can cultural studies move beyond memory to action?
