  • Weather, climate change and business models

Open Access•Tim Coles, Keith Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2026

Little prior research has investigated the relationship between weather and the performance of business models in complex, multi-site tourism organisations in the context of future climate change. Novel in scale and scope, through big datasets this paper examines how different facets of visitation and revenue generation varied by daily weather conditions at multiple attractions operated by two major heritage tourism organisations in the three fin…

    Open Access•Keith Jones•ARTICLE•MELUS Multi-Ethnic Literature of…•2023•References: 9

Among the most prolific and consequential US writers, Samuel R. Delany has published novels and short stories, a magnificent autobiography, various memoirs of social commentary, extraordinary essays of literary theory and criticism, and numerous (written) interviews. However, it is his Nevèrÿon sword and sorcery series (1979-87) that he describes as his most ambitious narrative “experiment.” Occupying Delany for nearly a decade, Nevèrÿon’s singul…

    Open Access•Mona M Abo-Zena, Keith Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 67

The purported goal of social science research is to develop approaches and applications to the psychological study of social issues that allow us to know, accurately and inclusively, the lived experiences of all human beings. However, our current theoretical and methodological tools, while perceived as “objective,” were founded on ahistorical and context‐eliminating perspectives that privilege research designs and analytic strategies that reflect…

  • Returning to Growth

Selwyn M Vickers, Anupam Agarwal et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2021

The University of Alabama at Birmingham academic medical center (UAB AMC) had achieved great success and growth during the 50 years since its founding. However, the challenging and more competitive environment of the 2000s left the UAB AMC on a downward trajectory. The UAB AMC had to overcome difficult internal cultural and structural barriers that stood in the way of the transformational change needed to remain competitive. Competition rather th…

  • Almost Shakespeare – But Not Quite

    Keith Jones•ARTICLE•Critical Survey•2021

Taking Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven and Gary Schmidt’s Wednesday Wars as test cases, this article explores generic considerations in modern novels that employ Shakespeare but do not retell or recast the plot of any particular work by Shakespeare. Questions to be considered include how the works employ the Shakespearean genres of comedy, tragedy, history, romance and tragicomedy to create their own genres – and, conceivably, to transcend…

  • Twentieth Century Baptists

    Keith Jones, Keith G Jones•ARTICLE•Baptist Quarterly•2021

In the era of J H Shakespeare the Baptist Union Council was encouraged to enter comprehensive negotiations for greater ecumenical cooperation and, possibly, church union. This was resisted and J H Rushbrooke pointed the Baptist Union Council towards more working together amongst European and world Baptists. Post Shakespeare the Union, through its Council, resisted ecumenical involvement, though it allowed succeeding General Secretaries to engage …

  • Unsung Psychology Pioneers

Leslie D Cramblet Alvarez, Jonah L Leach et al.•ARTICLE•The American Journal of Psychology•2020

Considerable evidence points to women’s absence in historical accounts of psychology. To examine current representations of women and people of color in commonly used history of psychology textbooks, a content analysis was conducted. Five textbooks were examined for the frequency of mentions of psychology pioneers in both the tables of contents and the body of the text. Coverage dedicated to men, particularly White men, outnumbered women and psyc…

Drawing on life-history interviews, this study explores the impact of Hurricane Katrina in the lives of 57 low-income, African American mothers who were 20-31 years old at the time of the storm. Hurricane Katrina massively disrupted the social networks upon which these mothers relied to facilitate life transitions and make ends meet. The literature would predict that the loss of these important supports would hinder the respondents' transition-to…

    Open Access•Marek Korczynski, Keith Jones•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2006•Cited by: 9

This paper explores the social origins and development of music relayed through loudspeakers in British factories during World War Two, focusing on the BBC programme Music While You Work, which provided a national soundtrack for factory work, and the contemporary institutions of Industrial Psychology, which promoted music as a highly 'valuable' accompaniment to work and formulated scientific principles governing its broadcast. Marek Korczynski, Emma Robertson et al.•ARTICLE•Labour History Review•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This paper examines the role of music in women's experience of factory work in the Second World War — an important topic but one largely overlooked in the existing literature. Two important forms of music flourished in war factories — the relaying of Music While You Work through loudspeakers, and the collective singing of workgroups. Drawing on a range of sources, the paper shows that music served to both express and create community in the workp…

    Keith Jones•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2005•Cited by: 13•References: 39

This paper discusses the historical use of music to produce more efficient, more committed, industrial workers. First emerging in academia early in the twentieth century, psychological interest in the industrial application of music had grown into a topic of popular interest and government investigation by the 1940s. Catalysed by the need for vast increases in production and the desire to cultivate 'citizenship' amongst industrial workers which t…

Comenius' spiritual classic provides the starting point to explore the worship and spirituality of Baptists in central and eastern Europe. Spirituality often develops in response or reaction to the world around the church. Some cross-fertilization might refresh the rather different spirituality of the west. Notes1 This article is based on an address given to the Annual Meeting of the Baptist Union Retreat Group (BURG) at the Baptist Assembly, Ply…

Helen Simons, Saville Kushner et al.•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2003•Cited by: 5

Governments across the world are seeking improvements in school performance. One avenue to improvement that has been widely promulgated is the reform of teaching through the development of evidence‐based practice. This paper reports evaluation data from a national programme in England that sought to put teachers at the heart of the search for evidence on which improvements in practice could be based. The analysis indicates that in each stage of t…
