  • Resonant relationships and ecological crisis

    Open Access•Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Theology•2025

As a means of world relation and interaction, music can be a powerful medium for situating human beings in relation to other entities and spaces by which they are surrounded. While Christian musical practices often focus most strongly on human-divine relationships, a recent turn to concepts of resonance suggests the potential to consider a wider range of interactions and aspirations. I propose that attentiveness to dimensions of resonance might p…

  • A Jacobean Draught of an 18-gun Ship in the Danish National Archives Drawn by Phineas Pett

    Mark Porter•ARTICLE•The Mariner s Mirror•2023

This article discusses an early seventeenth-century draught of an 18-gun ship, which the author believes was drawn by Phineas Pett himself. This is based on handwriting comparisons, dating evidence within the draught, dimensions and armament of the ship possibly portrayed, and a possible explanation of why an English draught is now in the Danish archives

  • Christian musical innovation and changing ecological relationships

    Open Access•Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•2023•References: 5

This article surveys recent musical innovation at the intersection of Christianity and changing ecological relationships. Drawing on a series of extended interviews carried out in late 2019 and early 2020 with participants involved in the evangelical song-writing project Doxecology, musical aspects of Christian Climate Action protests, the creation of forest church songbooks, and requiems for lost species, the author describes the experiences and…

  • Defend the core

Open Access•Jeremy D Maestas, Mark Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Rangelands•2022

New geographic strategies provide the landscape context needed for effective management of invasive annual grasses in sagebrush country. Identifying and proactively defending intact rangeland cores from annual grass invasion is a top priority for management. Minimizing vulnerability of rangeland cores to annual grass conversion includes reducing exposure to annual grass seed sources, improving resilience and resistance by promoting perennial plan…

  • Mediating Effects of Discipline Approaches on the Relationship between Parental Mental Health and Adolescent Antisocial Behaviours

    Open Access•Leartluk Nuntavisit, Mark Porter•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Poor parental mental health is one of the risk factors for child emotional and behavioural problems because it reduces caregiver's ability to provide appropriate care for their child. This study aimed to measure changes in parenting factors and adolescent behaviours after Multisystemic Therapy (MST), and to explore the mediating role of discipline approaches on the relationship between parental mental health and adolescent behavioural problems. T…

  • Ecologies of Resonance in Christian Musicking

Mark Porter, Mark James Porter•BOOK•Ecologies of Resonance in…•2020

  • Fleeing the resonance machine

    Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Traditional practices of congregational singing have often been brought into question within the contemporary so-called ‘Emerging Church’ movement. Emerging Church groups, through their self-consciously post-modern re-imaginings of Christianity, challenge not only ideas of group singing but also of the congregation itself, intentionally deconstructing the boundaries, patterns, and norms which have typically served to define the congregational gro…

  • Marginal Musical Spaces at St Aldates, Oxford

    Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Religion•2016•References: 1

St Aldates is a large Charismatic Anglican church in the centre of Oxford. The music of the regular Sunday services stands within the tradition of Contemporary Worship Music and the musical leaders cultivate an intentional sense of consistency. Within this environment, individuals are often expected to set aside existing musical tastes and attachments, adopting an attitude of worship regardless of their relationship to the musical environment. Aw…

  • Resounding Transcendence

    Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2016

This wide-ranging and significant collection welcomes within its pages a diversity of material that both opens up new interdisciplinary perspectives and, at moments, skirts on the edges of coherence. Oxford University Press describes the volume as ‘theoretically ambitious’, and the introduction by the two co-editors certainly lives up to this depiction. Indeed, such a wide range of themes is included within this introductory section that it can t…

  • Sounding Back and Forth

    Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2016•References: 23

The concept of authenticity has become increasingly ubiquitous within both contemporary social and cultural analysis and within studies of congregational music. In this paper, I suggest that it has become stretched through overuse, but that it can be usefully supplemented through the concept of resonance. I survey existing social and sonic usages of “resonance” and suggest the need to hold together a number of different understandings in order to…

  • The Developing Field of Christian Congregational Music Studies

    Mark Porter•ARTICLE•Ecclesial Practices•2014

Whilst Christian congregational music has long been an object of reflection and study it has often been pushed towards the margins of the various disciplines that it inhabits. In this article I survey some of the challenges such study has faced before suggesting that recent disciplinary developments have served to prepare the ground for increased study of Christian congregational music. I suggest that ethnomusicology, in particular, has played an…
