A survey of organizational structure and operational practices of elite youth football academies and national federations from around the world
AimMedical and performance units are integral components of player development programmes in elite football academies. Nevertheless, the nature of the operational processes implemented by practitioners within clubs and national federations remains unexplored. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to survey elite youth professional football academies from around the world regarding the operational processes adopted by their medical and perf…
The Ahmadis
Dedicated to supernatural revelation and the divine governance of society, Pakistan's Ahmadi community has endured mob violence and penal sanctions for refusing to embrace the beliefs of the Sunni majority. They disagree with fundamentalist ideas of exclusiveness and consider themselves a reformed version of Islam. Although they have adopted Enlightenment ideas about the pursuit of scientific knowledge and produced a notable number of technicians…

Religious cosmologies as justifications of moralities
The A. argues that in religiously inspired morality not only are the articulated moral principles and rules justified by showing how they are grounded in a sacred cosmos, but that problems of human behaviour for which no specific action guides can be found also receive moral guidance in the form of inferences from the world view and implicit valuations communicated in the symbols of religious traditions
Objectivity, Subjectivity and Beyond
Part of the problem in interpreting Smith within the framework of the subject-object polarity is that the term objective is used in various senses which are not always carefully discriminated. Thus objective knowledge may be, in the first place, knowledge of objects construed as external facts or things. As such, Smith argues, it is an inappropriate category for the knowledge of persons who are not things but conscious agents who assign meaning t…

Landscape, Consciousness, and Culture
A longstanding but inchoate preoccupation of mine is the geography of religions. How are landscape and religious faith related? In the context of this question, the definition of religion with which I work entails two considerations: first, what landscape features are incorporated into traditional religious symbol systems? I shall make a few observations about this geographic symbology below. Second, what is the existential connection between lan…

What Is Comparative Religion Comparing? The Subject Matter of 'Religious' Studies
What is the subject matter of the study of religion? Is it the external expression of religious persons and communities, i.e., the historical deposit of sacred scriptures, theologies, social institutions, ethical and liturgical prescriptions and practices? Accurate observation and description of these data and analysis to detect common structures are important and necessary. This is not, however, primary, since it excludes from its purview the pe…
Truth Claims for Religious Images
A rough circumscription of our area of study will be achieved when I say that by images I mean the kind of thing about which Ian Crombie and Austin Farrer have written in Faith and Logic and Farrer also in The Glass of Vision . In the latter work Farrer cites as examples of religious images the Kingdom of God, the Son of Man, the Israel of God and the ‘infinitely complex and fertile image of sacrifice and communion, of expiation and covenant’. Fa…
