Migration from Northern Ireland: A Survey of New Year Travellers as a Means of Identifying Emigrants
Travellers leaving Northern Ireland's air and sea ports at the end of the New Year holiday period 1988 were contacted as a means of identifying potential out-migrants. The method proved to be highly cost effective and reasonably successful. One thousand individuals who had either lived or had been born in Northern Ireland but who were now residing outside the province were obtained from 1,702 traveller contacts. The paper discusses the problems s…
Excess male mortality in Eastern Europe; a spatial perspective
Eastern Europe has specific characteristics of mortality. However, this is not to imply spatial or spatio-temporal homogeneity in patterns of mortality. Thus, at their moment, Hungary and Poland record the highest sex differentials in mortality in the whole Europe, and Czescoslovakia is not far behind, whereas Albania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania exhibit some of the smallest differences in this respect. The paper offers a few general pointer…
The Geography of the elderly Population of Northern Ireland
Family size and religious denomination in Northern Ireland
Some initial results from the recently conducted Northern Ireland Fertility Survey are examined with particular reference to the relationship between family size and religious denomination. While the overall average family size of Roman Catholics is still larger than that of non-Catholics, the extent of this differential is now narrowing as a result of the more rapid recent decline in the average size of Catholic families. In addition, there are …

Rising Mortality in Hungary
Although Hungary is not alone in Eastern Europe in experiencing a rising death rate during recent years, this adverse development would seem to have progressed further there than in neighbouring socialist countries, with the possible exception of the Soviet Union. The Hungarian death rate has been rising since the mid-1960s in part because the population was ageing but, more significantly from the health point of view, because of a real increase …

Fertility Differentials and Their Impact on Population Distribution and Composition in Northern Ireland
The geographical variability of fertility in Northern Ireland is described and related to the factors of religious denomination, social class, and proportion of the population who are married. Although the substantial differences in birthrate from one region to another have a significant impact on population composition, it is concluded that internal migration rather than natural increase is the more important component of regional population gro…
Hungary: An Economic Geography
Religious Affiliation and Demographic Variability in Northern Ireland
Significant demographic disparities exist between Roman Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The larger size of Roman Catholic families is not a product of low Protestant fertility but, on the contrary, of a very high Roman Catholic birth rate. The traditional Irish custom of delaying age at marriage is still an important factor limiting the size of Roman Catholic families, although birth control is becoming increasingly accepted as Rom…
Religion and legal abortion in Northern Ireland
The number of Northern Ireland women obtaining abortions in England has risen sharply from 36 for April–December 1968 to 775 in 1972. The figure for 1973 when it becomes available will probably be about 1000. The sample on which this paper is based consisted of 522 women who between January 1971 and August 1973 sought an abortion through the Ulster Pregnancy Advisory Association. The sample amounted to about one-quarter of all residents of Northe…

Internal Migration and Population Change in Hungary between 1959 and 1965
Population change within the various regions of Hungary is a function of spatial differentials in fertility, mortality and migration. The work of Hungarian demographers has been almost solely in the fields of fertility and mortality, and although extensive internal migration data have been collected since 1955, the analysis of the relationships between migration and population change has been neglected. The analysis presented in this paper uses a…
