Jahrhunderts. Göttingen, Wallstein 2021 was published on April 2, 2025 in the journal Historische Zeitschrift (volume 320, issue 2)
Introduction
New digital methods are currently enhancing the historian’s toolbox fundamentally. This thematic issue is a collection of papers discussing case studies in the fields of digitization, optical character recognition, distant reading, text mining, network analysis, and historical geographical information systems. The papers discuss opportunities and limitations in the application of digital methods in historical studies and point out fields of futur…
Infant company protection in the German semi-synthetic fibre industry
In the 1920 and early 1930s, the German semi-synthetic fibre industry was dominated by a duopoly of two big players. The incumbent firms were not willing to expand their staple fibre capacities to the extent demanded by the new Nazi government, which prepared for autarky and war. Hence the government encouraged other private companies, especially spinning mills, to found eight regional staple fibre plants and protected them against the incumbents…
Turn, Turn, Turn
The increasing availability of digital text collections and the corresponding establishment of methods for computer-assisted analysis offer completely new perspectives on historical textual sources and historiographical output. The results of a topic-modeling analysis exploring publication trends in eleven leading German-language history journals (around 9,000 original research articles) since World War II reveal several epistemological turns tha…
Deutschland 1871
Diskurs, Narrativ, Sonderweg, Hitler, Turn.
The following issue arose from a section at the Congress for Economic and Social History in Regensburg in March 2019 and focuses on fiscal conflicts in Europe from the early modern period until today. Distributive fiscal conflicts are seen here as a probe into the past which can increase our understanding of historical social structures. Fiscal history is analysed as a central arena of the modern state. The introduction provides an overview of cu…

Jahrhunderts
Economic history explores developments in the economy over time, thereby bridging historiography and economics. This textbook offers German-speaking readers a balanced focus on history and economics. It illustrates the power of concepts and methods from economics when applied to understanding broader historical issues. History brings life to what might otherwise be dry economic theory.
Inequality, Well-Being and Happiness in Historical Perspective
Happiness research is a comparably new field of economics. Until Richard Easterlin’s seminal contribution published in 1974, most economists believed there to be a clear and positive correlation between the material standard of living and subjective well-being (or happiness). Economic happiness research has found that, although income matters, inequality, other economic and non-economic factors also play an important role in subjective well-being…
Guns and Butter – But No Margarine
The German population’s material standard of living during the ‘peace years’ of the Nazi regime (1933–38) is much debated. We use hitherto disregarded consumption data and the axiom of revealed preferences to test whether the material standard of living improved. We find that the food consumption bundle realized in 1935–36 must have been inferior to that of 1927–28, despite GDP per capita being much higher. Even in 1937–38 consumers were probably…
The imposed gift of Versailles
Weimar's politicians used to attribute the continuous budget crises after the currency stabilization of 1923-4 to the burden put on the German economy by the Treaty of Versailles, in particular the reparation payments. This argument, which is still popular, neglects the fact that the restriction of the German military to 115,000 men relieved the German central budget considerably. In a counterfactual analysis we assess the savings in additional m…
The Laspeyres-Paradox
The mortality of Allied prisoners of war and Belgian civilian deportees in German custody during the First World War
Influenced by results for the Second World War, recent research on forced labour in Imperial Germany during the Great War has stressed continuities of racial discrimination against East European workers. While agreeing that prisoners of war (POWs) from Russia were discriminated against, I reject the view that this led to a significantly worse mortality regime for the group as a whole. Using the same raw data, I calculate annual rates which show t…

Wann begannen Fiskal- und Steuerwettbewerb
The compensation of Nazi Germany's forced labourers
The debate on financial compensation for former forced labourers in Nazi Germany has raised the question of how many victims are still alive and eligible for compensation. Historical research has so far focused on qualitative aspects of the forced labour system. There are at best ad hoc estimates even for the number of foreign labourers in Nazi Germany during the war. We combine Nazi statistics with post-war demographic data for 20 countries to e…
Forced Laborers in Nazi Germany
When Germany and Austria discussed the matter of compensating former forced laborers in the German economy during World War II, it became clear that no definitive estimate of how many were still alive was available. Combining Nazi statistics with postwar demographic data for twenty countries reveals that the number of foreigners deployed in the German economy totaled around 13.5 million, of whom approximately 11 million survived the war. Fifty-fi…
Economic Crises and the European Revolutions of 1848
Recent historical research tends to view the 1848 revolutions in Europe as caused by a surge of radical ideas and by long-term socioeconomic problems. However, many contemporary observers interpreted much of the upheaval as a consequence of short-term economic causes, specifically the serious shortfall in food supply that had shaken large parts of the Continent in 1845–1847, and the subsequent industrial slump. Applying standard quantitative meth…
