Data on survival of recent births as a source of child mortality estimates in the developing world: An assessment of census data
In many less developed countries, household surveys collect full and summary birth histories to provide estimates of child mortality. However, full birth histories are expensive to collect and cannot provide precise estimates for small areas, and summary birth histories only provide past child mortality trends. A simple method that provides estimates for the most recent past uses questions about the survival of recent births in censuses or large …
The 'Own Children' fertility estimation procedure: A reappraisal
The Full Birth History has become the dominant source of estimates of fertility levels and trends for countries lacking complete birth registration. An alternative, the 'Own Children' method, derives fertility estimates from household age distributions, but is now rarely used, partly because of concerns about its accuracy. We compared the estimates from these two procedures by applying them to 56 recent Demographic and Health Surveys. On average,…

Agents of Empire: Spanish Ambassadors in Sixteenth-Century Italy
Historians have long held that during the decades from the end of the Habsburg-Valois Wars in 1559 until the outbreak in 1618 of the Thirty Years' War, Spanish domination of Italy was so complete that one can refer to the period as a "pax hispanica." In this book, based on extensive research in the papers of the ambassadors who represented Charles V and Philip II, Michael J. Levin instead reveals the true fragility of Spanish control and the ambi…

A New World Order: The Spanish Campaign for Precedenge in Early Modern Europe
During the period 1558-1566, a major conflict erupted between Spanish and French ambassadors in Rome over the issue of national and monarchical precedence. This conflict reflected confusion about the transition of power between Charles V and Philip II and, more importantly, Spain's newfound sense of its greatness and destiny in the sixteenth century. Spanish ambassadors waged a propaganda campaign to try to change the accepted ranking of European…

Micronesian Migration to Guam: Social and Economic Characteristics
The recent lowering of some obstacles to the migration of Micronesians to Guam has resulted in a sudden influx of migrants. In a short time, Guam has experienced many of the impacts associated with large scale migration on population growth, provision of services and the issue of ethnic assimilation. An extensive demographic profile of newly settled migrants is presented, followed by a discussion of future implications. Micronesian migration is e…

The 1980 Census of Population and Housing in the Pacific
Participant observation research was vital to the design of the 1980 Census of Population and Housing as it was carried out in the Outlying Areas of the Pacific. These areas include American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Marianas and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The traditions, languages, and environment of these islands are so different from those of the United States that the Census Bureau contracted for an anthropologist to serve as…
