  • Variation of 14 C in Japanese Tree Rings Related to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident

Open Access•Tamás Vargas, László Palcsu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•References: 28

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis was performed on Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) tree rings from Koriyama, Fukushima prefecture. Our primary aim was to detect any 14 C release from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident on 11 March 2011. We also completed and assessed the 14 C level in Japanese tree rings for the period of 1990–2014 because of the lack of environmental 14 C results in the Japanese island that time. For this reason…

  • Radionuclides in Ancient Relics Obtained from the Matsusaki Site and the Hirohata Shellmound on the Pacific Coast of Japan

Open Access•Tomoko Ohta, Yasunori Mahara et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 11

We compared 2 archaeological relics of different preservation environments, white substances adhering to a vessel from the Matsusaki site and to earthenware from Hirohata, by measuring their environmental radioactivity, 14 C, 228 Ra/ 226 Ra, 234 U/ 238 U, and 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, and major element contents (Ca, Sr, Mg, Fe, and Mn). The results showed that the 2 materials were somewhat different and also reflected differences in their preservation enviro…

  • Early Bronze Age Strata at Tell Ghanem Al-Ali Along the Middle Euphrates in Syria

Open Access•Toshio Nakamura, Mitsuo Hoshino et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 5

We collected charcoal fragments during an archaeological excavation at the Tell Ghanem al-Ali site, located on the lowest terrace of the middle Euphrates River, and measured their radiocarbon ages with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Two trenches, Square-1 and Square-2, were dug on the slope of the tell; 8 building levels were detected in the Square-2 trench. In total, 31 charcoal samples were collected from the 2 trenches, and their calibra…

  • Isotopic Analysis and Cycling of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon at Lake Biwa, Central Japan

Open Access•Toshio Nakamura, Sadao Kojima et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 12

This paper reports on concentrations and carbon isotopic results of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water samples collected at four locations and from several depths in Lake Biwa, central Japan, covering every season of the year, starting in the spring of 1995. Depth profiles of DIC concentration and DIC δ 13 C showed a strong seasonal pattern, as a result of vertical mixing of the lake water in winter and early spring, or lack of mixing in t…

Open Access•Toshio Nakamura, Hiroyuki Otsuka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•1996

It is of great interest to know how much the land expanded towards the ocean as the result of the sea-level decrease during the Würm glacial stage. The existence of land bridges, that plays an important role in transporting human, animals and plants between the Eurasian Continent and the Japanese Islands during the Last Glacial, is still under debate. Geographical and geological studies have been performed to determine the location of shorelines …
