  • The Urge to Merge

Robert M Bell, Joan Keesey et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1994

This paper describes a procedure used to link Medicaid claims data to California vital statistics records for very low birthweight infants. The linkage involved about 53,000 infants born from 1980 to 1987 and 1.46 million claims for delivery/birth-related hospital admissions during the same period. Because the two data files did not share a unique identifier, record linkage required combining evidence across several linking variables: delivery ho…

This paper analyzes movements among household types. Persons in one household may join another type. Correspondingly, a household’s structure may change when someone joins it. Data are from the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics, spanning 1968–1980. The individuals followed in the survey generated spells analyzed with a multivariate competing risk hazard model. We develop a map of the flow among household types and of the economic and demographic pr…

  • Correcting for Unmeasured Heterogeneity in Hazard Models Using the Heckman - Singer Procedure

    James Trussell, Toni Richards•ARTICLE•Sociological Methodology•1985•Cited by: 10

A nonparametric strategy for correcting for unobserved heterogeneity in hazard models is described and used examine covariates of child mortality and birth interval length in Republic of Korea. An attempt is also made to discover whether specific allowance for heterogeneity alters covariate effects estimates and conclusions that would have been reached in hazard models that ignore unobserved heterogeneity. In addition authors examine the sensitiv…

  • Calculation of age-specific fertility schedules from tabulations of parity in two censuses

    Open Access•Ansley J Coale, A Meredith John et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1985•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The mathematics of stable populations recently has been generalized to cover populations with time-varying fertility and mortality by a modification incorporating the sum of age-varying growth rates in place of the fixed growth rate of a stable population. Equations that characterize nonstable populations apply to any cohort-like phenomenon with a measurable property that cumulates gains or losses through time. In particular, the equations fit th…

  • Weather, nutrition, and the economy

    Open Access•Toni Richards•ARTICLE•Demography•1983•Cited by: 16•References: 17

This paper analyzes short-run fluctuations in national time series of vital events for France in the period 1740 to 1909. Fertility, mortality, and nuptiality form a simultaneous system which interacts with economic and meteorological conditions. In the short run, the demographic variables are endogenous. Economic and meteorological conditions are exogenous. Our indicator of economic conditions is the price of wheat, the principal food crop. Biom…

  • Fertility decline in Germany

    Toni Richards•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1977•Cited by: 12•References: 3

A re-analysis of Knodel's data provides some new results for the fertility decline in Germany and a new approach to testing hypotheses about the demographic transition. Two formulations of transition theory are compared: one emphasizing the importance of changing social and economic structure for fertility decline; the other, the changing relationships between fertility and its determinants over time. To evaluate these formulations, multivariate …
