Peace Settlements and Political Transformation in Divided Societies: Rethinking Northern Ireland and South Africa, written by Adrian Guelke
a Professor of Comparative Politics, has made many telling and original scholarly contributions, singularly and together, to the study of the conflicts and the peace processes in South Africa and Northern Ireland. But, why this comparison? How does a region of an island off North-West Europe have anything in common with a massive country in Africa? One connection: ethnic conflict in a divided society is straightforward. In both Northern Ireland and S…
Being Unfolded: Edith Stein on the Meaning of Being
What is the meaning of being? More concretely, “What do human beings and quarks, ideal geometrical shapes and possible worlds, ‘sickness’ and ‘health’, the number three and gravity all have in common that allows us to say that each of them is?” (xvii). In Being Unfolded, Thomas Gricoski attempts to get to the bottom of this perennially valid question by exploring the question of the meaning of being in one of Edith Stein’s later philosophical wor…
Portuguese Africa: Rebellion and Resilience
In this chapter, Ribeiro de Meneses and McNamara summarize Portugal’s colonial wars in Angola and Mozambique, including an emphasis on South African and Rhodesian readings of the conflict. There is an examination of the prospects and problems of the key liberation groups. They explain the implications of the widening of the war in both Angola and Mozambique, as well as Portugal’s conflicting strategies of engagement and confrontation with black A…
First to Fall: Portugal from Coup to Revolution
The first part of this chapter looks at the conflicting pressures regarding Portugal’s colonial struggles that fell on Salazar’s successor, Marcelo Caetano. These gave hints that Portugal’s open-ended commitment to colonial wars was beginning to break down. The second half explores the Portuguese Revolution in detail and why its development meant that decolonization would turn out to be a much swifter and messier process than it might otherwise h…
Defying the Wind of Change
The forces pushing Portugal, Southern Rhodesia and South Africa together are examined. This chapter begins with a discussion of the sometimes fraught relationships between the white-ruled states of southern Africa, questioning how much of a solid white monolith there actually was before 1960. It proceeds to detail the ‘white states of emergency’ that transformed the national and international politics of southern Africa between 1959 and 1961 and …
Debacle and Détente Redux: South Africa in Angola and Rhodesia, 1975–1977
This chapter traces the end of Portuguese Angola, the South African intervention in the Angolan Civil War, Soviet and Cuban responses, the American dimension and the failed attempt by Henry Kissinger to bring about agreement in southern Africa to forestall further communist adventures in the region.

South Africa and the Aftermath of Portugal's ‘Exemplary’ Decolonization: The Security Dimension
Allister Sparks, in his seminal study of Apartheid, The Mind of South Africa, writes: ‘though it occurred five thousand miles away among another people in another continent, in South Africa the Portuguese Revolution was an event of catalytic importance that changed the whole directional flow of public affairs’. 25 April 1974 was, for Sparks, a ‘simultaneous turning point at which the Afrikaner revolution created and entered a phase of crisis and …

The Origins of Exercise Alcora, 1960–71
Over the course of the 1960s, Portugal, Rhodesia, and South Africa, hard-pressed by African nationalist movements and international opinion, grew closer together, realising that their common enemies could only be defeated by a common stance. The most important attempt to meet the threat to white political domination in Southern Africa was Exercise ALCORA, a military understanding negotiated, in secret, in October 1970. From then until the Portugu…

portrayed as no longer having any definite strategy when it came to her colonial possessions by the late 1960s and early 70s. The country is depicted as hanging on to them for no obvious reason other than the fact that the regime’s fate was tied to the wars in Africa and so these had to continue, whatever the cost to the local and metropolitan population, to Portugal’s finances (even if the recent discovery of oil in Angola, among other positive …

Britain, Nasser and the Outbreak of the Six Day War
This article explores the role of Britain in the lead-up to the 1967 Middle Eastern War. It analyzes why Britain took such an active role in the initial stages and why this was scaled back to a policy of non-intervention in the end. It concludes that Britain's interests in the Middle East, which were primarily the protection of oil, the maintenance of a balance of power and the containment of Nasser, became dependent on an Israeli military victor…

Intellectual Values: Campus and Seminary
Comparative study of intellectual values held by liberal arts college seniors on two Catholic and two nonsectarian college campuses and by Jesuit seminarians reveals that the seminarians tend to emphasize moral formation in their definition of the ideal college education more than do the other two groups, and that the seminarians place far greater emphasis on interpersonal values in education and occupation. Further, in their educational and occu…
Intellectual Values and Instrumental Religion
Analysis of questionnaire data from 1107 Arts College seniors at Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, and Notre Dame gives no support to the hypothesis of church-linked differences regarding interest in intellectual values. But when the responses from the two Catholic College campuses are anlayzed, a within-church association is found between an instrumental orientation to religion and weaker intellectual values
