Occupational stress
Occupational stress
Work-related psychosocial stressors originate in social structures and processes, affect the human organism through psychological processes, and influence health through four types of closely interrelated mechanisms--emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological. The health outcome is modified by situational (e.g., social support) and individual factors (e.g., personality, coping repertoire). The work-environment-stress-health system is a d…

An Experimental Study of Social Isolation of Elderly People
Psychoendocrine and metabolic effects of social isolation and understimulation in real life were examined in a controlled study of 60 elderly people representative of their age group. Together with the staff and the elderly, a social activation program was formed at a senior citizen apartment building. Half of the elderly were part of this activation program (experimental group). The other half constituted the control group. Blood sampling and ps…

A Longitudinal Study of 21 Subjects with Coronary Heart Disease
Twenty-one male, well-rehabilitated survivors of myocardial infarction participated in repeated observations during a period of 2 to 4 months on the same weekdays and hours of the day. The sum of the self-reportedlifechange units for the week prior to the observation was independently calculated by a psychologist. It was found that several subjects had experienced numerous psychosocial changes during the observation period. Hence, the experiment …
Sympatho-Adrenomedullary Activity, Diuresis, and Emotional Reactions During Visual Sexual Stimulation in Human Females and Males
A total of 53 female and 50 male students were shown a 11⁄2-hr film program preceded and followed by control periods of equal duration. Adrenaline and noradrenaline excretion increased significantly in both groups during the film period in relation to control levels before and after. During the film period, sexual arousal was the main emotional reaction reported by both sexes, the self-rating scores as well as their increases, however, being sign…
The Urinary Output of Adrenalin and Noradrenalin During Pleasant and Unpleasant Emotional States
In a strictly standardized experimental setting, 20 healthy female office clerks were shown 4 entirely different types of motion pictures on 4 consecutive days. Bland natural-scenery films lowered the urinary catecholamines significantly. An aggression-provoking film and an amusing one were accompanied by similar and significant increases in adrenalin excretion and similar adrenalin/noradrenalin ratios. Obviously, emotional responses rated by the…
