  • Use of Periodic Abstinence in Bangladesh

Open Access•Nashid Kamal, Unnati Rani Saha et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2007

Data from a nationally representative study in Bangladesh (BDHS 1996–97) were analysed to identify significant predictors of use of periodic abstinence, in comparison with other modern contraceptive methods. The study found that women in Bangladesh mostly use modern methods during their peak reproductive years, after which some of them switch to periodic abstinence. These women tend to be more from educated and from higher socioeconomic backgroun…

  • Determinants of Pill Failure in Rural Bangladesh

Open Access•Unnati Rani Saha, Mehrab Ali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2004

The pill is the most popular family planning method in Bangladesh. However, the failure rate of this method in Matlab, a typical rural area, has been found to be very high. It is estimated that with the current level of failure of the pill and other temporary contraceptives in Matlab, it is unlikely that fertility in Bangladesh will come down to replacement level without a change in contraceptive method mix. It is, therefore, important to know th…

  • Health Interventions and Health Equity

    Open Access•Michael A Koenig, Michael Koenig et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 36

Although the existence of socioeconomic differentials in infant and childhood mortality in developing countries is well established. little consensus exists as to the most effective approaches to reducing such differentials. This article utilizes longitudinal data from the Matlab study area in rural Bangladesh to investigate the impact of an efficacious child survival intervention-measles vaccination-on reductions in gender and socioeconomic diff…

  • Factors affecting use of contraception in Matlab, Bangladesh

    Open Access•Mehrab Ali Khan•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1996

This study examines the relationship between family planning, perceived availability of contraceptives, and sociodemographic factors in rural Bangladesh. Data are from the 1990 KAP survey in the Matlab treatment and comparison areas, using a sample of about 8500 married women of reproductive age. The contraceptive prevalence rate was 57% in the treatment area but substantially lower in the comparison area where mainly traditional methods of famil…

  • Contraceptive Use in Matlab, Bangladesh in 1990

Michael A Koenig, Michael Koenig et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1992•Cited by: 19

The results of a 1990 knowledge, attitudes, and practice survey in Matlab, Bangladesh, indicate that contraceptive prevalence has risen to 57 percent in the maternal and child health/family planning project area. Between 1984 and 1990 significant increases were registered in the proportions of women using contraceptives for the purposes of spacing and limiting births. By 1990 fertility control in the intervention area had become so widely diffuse…

  • Contraceptive use patterns in Matlab, Bangladesh

Open Access•Mehrab Ali Khan, Caroline Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1989

An experimental maternal and child health and family planning programme has been in existence in Matlab for almost 10 years. During this time the project has achieved remarkable success in the area of family planning. Based upon a 1984 survey, this study examines the pattern of contraceptive use in the Matlab treatment area, and contrasts it with the regular government programme in the neighbouring comparison area. Important differences between t…

  • Trends in Family Size Preferences and Contraceptive Use in Matlab, Bangladesh

Michael A Koenig, Michael Koenig et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1987•Cited by: 11

In the nearly ten years of its existence, the Matlab Family Planning and Health Services Project has been characterized by a remarkable rise in contraceptive use and a corresponding decline in fertility. This study examines available evidence on trends in family size preferences in the Matlab area from 1977 to 1984 and their relationship to contraceptive use. Within the Matlab treatment area, the most significant factor behind the increase in con…
