  • Impacts of future scenarios on the nitrogen loss from agricultural supply chains in the Chesapeake Bay

Open Access•Michael Gomez, Caitlin Grady et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Excessive nitrogen (N) pollution in the Chesapeake Bay is threatening ecological health. This study presents a multilayer N flow network model where each network layer represents a stage in the production step from raw agricultural commodities such as corn to final products such as packaged meat. We use this model to assess the impacts of alternative future agricultural production and land use changes on multiple pathways of N pollution within th…

  • A balancing act

    Open Access•Michael Gomez, Caitlin Grady•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Global food systems must be a part of strategies for greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, optimal water use, and nitrogen pollution reduction. Insights from research in these areas can inform policies to build sustainable food systems yet limited work has been done to build understanding around whether or not sustainability efforts compete with supply chain resilience. This study explores the interplay between food supply resilience and environmental…

Open Access•Angelique Haugerud, Carolyn Brown et al.•BOOK•Culture of Politics in Modern Kenya•1995•Cited by: 70

Once the major success story of a troubled continent, by the early 1990s Kenya came to be regarded as its fallen star. This book challenges such images of reversal and the analytical polarities which sustain them. Based on several years of research in Kenya, the analysis ranges from telescopic to microscopic fields of vision - from national political culture, oratory, and the staging of politics, to everyday struggles for livelihood among people …

Michael A Gomez, Michael Gomez•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•1987

Bundu, a precolonial Muslim polity located in what is now eastern Senegal, played a major role in the development of commerce in Senegambia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Strategically placed between the Senegal and Gambia rivers, Bundu served as a major staging area through which the gold of neighboring Bambuk and slaves from Segu and Kaarta flowed westward, in exchange for European goods. A focus for competition between French and …
