  • How to measure political polarization in text-as-data? A scoping review of computational social science approaches

Catarina Pereira, Raquel Da Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Information Technology…•2025

The rise of political polarization within western societies has been portrayed by events such as the United States Capitol riot or the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. In this context, we argue that computational social science (CSS) methods offer a scalable and language-independent fashion to measure political polarization, enabling the processing of big data. In this vein, this article offers the first scoping review of the applic…

  • Benefits of Two 24-Week Interactive Cognitive–Motor Programs on Body Composition, Lower-Body Strength, and Processing Speed in Community Dwellings at Risk of Falling

Open Access•Hugo Rosado, Catarina Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This 24-week randomized controlled trial study evaluated the effects of two interactive cognitive−motor programs on body composition, lower-body strength, and processing speed in community dwellings at risk of falling. Forty-eight participants (75.0 ± 5.4 years) were allocated into EG1 (psychomotor intervention program), EG2 (combined program (psychomotor intervention + whole-body vibration)), and a control group. EG programs induced significant …

  • The relationship between depression and risk of violence in portuguese community-dwelling older people

    Open Access•Felismina R P Mendes, Felismina Mendes et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The severity of depressive symptomatology plays an essential role in the risk of violence against community-dwelling older people. Moreover, it was found that older persons with depression symptomatology were at higher risk of being victims of violence. Our study findings support the need for protective measures within mental health national or regional policies to prevent depression and violence against community-dwelling older people

  • Can two multimodal psychomotor exercise programs improve attention, affordance perception, and balance in community dwellings at risk of falling? A randomized controlled trial

Open Access•Catarina Pereira, Jorge Bravo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

In the ESACA project, a wide range of potential influencing factors on falls and violence risk factors were measured, and comprehensive quality control measures were applied. Overall, the results suggest that for falls and violence prevention strategies to be effective, it is essential to evaluate, diagnose, and inform all stakeholders in a directed and useful way. Moreover, we believe that our project outcomes may help change mindsets and behavi…

  • Development and validation of a continuous fall risk score in community-dwelling older people

Open Access•Jorge Bravo, Hugo Rosado et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The cFRs was shown to be a valid dynamic multifactorial fall risk assessment tool for epidemiological analyses and clinical practice. Moreover, the potential for the cFRs to become a widely used approach regarding fall prevention in community-dwelling older people was demonstrated, since it involves a holistic intrinsic-exposure approach to the phenomena. Further investigation is required to validate the cFRs with other samples since it is a samp…

  • Key factor cutoffs and interval reference values for stratified fall risk assessment in community-dwelling older adults

Open Access•Catarina Pereira, Gonçalo Veiga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Assessment of community-dwelling older adults' fall risk should focus on the above outcomes to establish individual older adults' fall risk profiles. Moreover, the design of fall prevention interventions should manage a person's identified risks and take into account the determined cutoffs and respective interval values for fall risk stratification

  • Effects of two 24-week multimodal exercise programs on reaction time, mobility, and dual-task performance in community-dwelling older adults at risk of falling

These children need to be identified and supported by mental health workers early, and hence, clinical practice in adult mental health services needs to change from a focus on individual patients to a more systemic family focus. "Semente," a …
