  • The Prevalence of Dyslexia: A New Approach to Its Estimation

    Open Access•Richard K Wagner, Fotena A Zirps et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Learning Disabilities•2020

How prevalent is dyslexia? A definitive answer to this question has been elusive because of the continuous distribution of reading performance and predictors of dyslexia and because of the heterogeneous nature of samples of poor readers. Samples of poor readers are a mixture of individuals whose reading is consistent with or expected based on their performance in other academic areas and in language, and individuals with dyslexia whose reading is…

  • Extracting the Variance Inflation Factor and Other Multicollinearity Diagnostics from Typical Regression Results

Christopher G Thompson, Rae Seon Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Basic and Applied Social Psychology•2017

Multicollinearity is a potential problem in all regression analyses. However, the examination of multicollinearity is rarely reported in primary studies. In this article we discuss and show several post hoc methods for assessing multicollinearity. One such multicollinearity diagnostic is the variance inflation factor. We outline the post hoc variance inflation factor method, which computes the variance inflation factor from the standardized regre…

  • Examining differential item functioning trends for English language learners in a reading test: A meta-analytical approach

Open Access•Jin Koo, Betsy Jane Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2014

In this study, differential item functioning (DIF) trends were examined for English language learners (ELLs) versus non-ELL students in third and tenth grades on a large-scale reading assessment. To facilitate the analyses, a meta-analytic DIF technique was employed. The results revealed that items requiring knowledge of words and phrases in context favored non-ELLs in grade 3, whereas items requiring evaluation skills favored ELLs in grade 10. H…

  • The Degree of Dependence Between Multiple-Treatment Effect Sizes

    Rae-Seon Kim, Betsy Jane Becker•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2010

We examined the degree of dependence between standardized-mean-difference effect sizes in multiple-treatment studies in meta-analysis in terms of the correlation formula provided by Gleser and Olkin (1994) . To explore the impact of group size and the values of the true multiple-treatment effect sizes, we simplified the formula for the correlation in terms of the ratio of group sizes and under conditions of equality of sample and effect sizes. Th…

  • Teacher Verbal Ability and School Outcomes: Where Is the Evidence

    Open Access•Ariel M Aloe, Betsy Jane Becker•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 38

Many have claimed that teachers’ verbal ability is among the most important predictors of school outcomes. Teachers’ verbal ability has been thought to predict student achievement ever since the relationship was found in the classic Equality of Educational Opportunity (EEO) study by Coleman et al. By way of meta-analysis the authors examine the evidence on teachers’ verbal ability as a predictor of school outcomes. They find that the evidence is …

  • Sensitivity as a Privileged Predictor of Attachment: A Second Perspective on De Wolff and van IJzendoorn's Meta‐analysis

    Open Access•M Angela Nievar, Betsy Jane Becker•ARTICLE•Social Development•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 6

De Wolff and van IJzendoorn's meta‐analysis supported the relation of parental behavior to attachment security; however, they concluded that sensitivity was not the best predictor of attachment security. This secondary analysis of their data re‐examined their conclusion and tested moderators of the relation between sensitivity and attachment, such as socioeconomic status and study methodology. A different grouping of studies combining behavior ty…

  • Item Characteristics and Gender Differences on the SAT-M for Mathematically Able Youths

    Betsy Jane Becker•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1990•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Item responses of a group of mathematically talented junior high school students were studied to explore the significant advantages that have been reported for males on the mathematical sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT-M). Rasch latent trait item difficulties were estimated, and a regression-like linear analysis was used to examine the interactions of item features with sex of examinees. SAT-M items were classified by subject-matter …

  • Synthesizing standardized mean‐change measures

    Open Access•Betsy Jane Becker•ARTICLE•British Journal of Mathematical…•1988

A new approach is presented for the meta‐analysis of data from pre‐test‐post‐test designs. With this approach, data from studies using different designs may be compared directly and studies without control groups need not be omitted. The approach is based on a ‘standardized mean‐change’ measure, computed for each sample within a study, and involves analysis of the standardized mean changes and differences in the standardized mean changes. Analyse…
