  • Are emotional stimuli prioritised in visual awareness

    Mike Doswell, Abbie N Abe et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2026•References: 41

Although various features of visual stimuli have been shown to affect access to awareness, it is still unclear whether and to what extent emotional stimuli have privileged access to visual awareness. We conducted three online experiments, using a breaking Repeated Masked Suppression (bRMS) paradigm, to assess whether positively and negatively valenced/high-arousal photographs would emerge from masking (break out of forward/backward masking by ima…

  • Lateralized Readiness Potentials Reveal Motor Slowing in the Aging Brain

    A B Roggeveen, David J Prime et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2007•Cited by: 1

Older adults consistently show slower reaction times (RTs) to the onset of motion. Both cognitive slowing and motor slowing have been suggested as causes of this effect. The lateralized readiness potential (LRP) of the electroencephalogram can be used to separate perceptual and decision processes from motor programming and execution as causes of RT differences. We used the LRP to discern the origin of slowing in RT to motion onset that occurs in …

  • Affective Quality Attributed to Environments: A Factor Analytic Study

    Open Access•James A Russell, Lawrence M Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Behavior•1981

A set of 105 commonly used adjectives descriptive of the affective quality of molar physical environments was developed and factor analyzed (based on 323 subjects' ratings, each of a different environment). Two, independent, bipolar factors of affective quality-pleasing and arousing quality-were obtained and shown to correlate highly with subjects' affective reactions of pleasure and arousal to the environments. The pleasing and- arousing quality…

  • Multidimensional Scaling Of The Molar Physical Environment

    Lawrence M Ward•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1977

Two experiments were carried out in order to make tests of several hypotheses concerning perceptions of the molar physical environment. In the first, subjects did multiple category sorts of pictures of environments from three different functional orientations (what is done in or to the environment). In the second, subjects made similarity judgments of all pairs of the same pictures. Data from both experiments were analyzed by INDSCAL and MDSCAL a…

  • Pattern of performance and ability attribution: An unexpected primacy effect

Edward E Jones, Leslie Rock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1968•Cited by: 52•References: 2

6 experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of varying distributions of success and failure on attributions of intellectual ability. In the 1st 4 experiments 5s confronted a stimulus person who solved 15 out of 30 problems in a random, descending, or ascending success pattern. In the 5th experiment only the descending and ascending patterns were compared. Contrary to prediction, the performer who showed improvement (ascending success)…
