  • Speaking truth to power

    J Arthur Woodward, Jamie Woodward•CHAPTER•Making Geography Matter•2025

Collaborative microplastics research in the rivers of Manchester set out to establish the extent of the microplastic contamination problem and to better understand the main processes involved in their entry, storage, and transport. It was also driven by a concern to assess the ecological threat posed by these particles. Mapping the geography of microplastic contamination on river beds at the catchment scale is key to understanding the ecological …

  • Performing History: The Effects of a Dramatic Art-Based History Program on Student Achievement and Enjoyment

    Mark Otten, Mark R M Otten et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Research in Social…•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This study examines the influence of a dramatic art-based history program for fifth-grade students on both their learning and enjoyment of history. The program, called "Performing History," reflects theories of effective use of drama in the classroom as well as successful ways to teach history. The program presents historical information as part of a coherent story embedded in a musical drama that students rehearse and perform. Students who parti…

  • Genlog II: A General Log-Linear Model Program for the Personal Computer

    Open Access•Douglas G Bonett, J Arthur Woodward et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1985

This paper describes an interactive microcomputer program that performs general tests of hypotheses in the log-linear model. The program was designed for both teaching and research purposes. This paper details program capabilities, input/output procedures, restrictions, availability as well as the theoretical basis of the approach

  • An APL Procedure for Computing the Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues of a Real Symmetric Matrix

    Open Access•James L Adams, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1984

An APL procedure is presented for rapid, efficient computation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a real symmetric matrix. Since APL has an interpreter, but not a compiler, many iterative procedures are very slow when executed in APL. In this paper, the writers develop a highly compact way of coding an iterative procedure in APL and then apply it to Kaiser's JK method of computing eigenvectors. The resulting APL program is presented in the Ap…

  • Ganova: A Univariate/Multivariate Analysis of Variance Program for the Personal Computer

    Open Access•Mary‐Lynn Brecht, M L Brecht et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1984

This paper describes an interactive microcomputer program that performs the general univariate and multivariate analysis of variance. The system was designed as both a teaching and research tool appropriate to a wide range of user expertise. The paper details program capabilities, input/output procedures, restrictions, availability, as well as the theoretical basis of the approach

  • A statistical lower bound to population reliability

    J Arthur Woodward, Peter M Bentler•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1978•Cited by: 5

The time-averaged solids velocity profiles in a freely bubbling, three dimensional, gas–solid fluidized bed have been experimentally quantified for two different bed materials and different bed aspect ratios at different superficial gas velocities by performing positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) experiments. A cylindrical fluidized bed with an inner diameter of 0.306 m was filled with either glass beads with a diameter of 400–600 μm or wi…

  • Common Misconceptions Concerning The Analysis Of Covariance

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1977

Four misconceptions about the requirements for proper use of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) are examined by means of Monte Carlo simulation. Conclusions are that ANCOVA does not require covariates to be measured without error, that ANCOVA can be used effectively to adjust for initial group differences that result from nonrandom assignment which is dependent on observed covariate scores, that ANCOVA does not provide unbiased estimates of true tre…

  • Nonrandom assignment and the analysis of covariance

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1977

  • Nonrandom assignment and the analysis of covariance

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1977

  • Nonorthogonal Analysis of Variance in Repeated Measures Experimental Designs

    Open Access•J Arthur Woodward, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1976

A convenient, two-stage general linear regression approach to analysis of variance is described for use in univariate or multivariate designs involving one repeated measurement factor and one or more independent classification factors. A brief illustrative example is provided

  • A Computer Program for Calculating Power of the F-Test

    Open Access•J Arthur Woodward, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1976

This paper describes a simple computer program for calculating the power of the F-test. The approach is based upon two independent approximations—the first, a normalization of the non-central F distribution and the second, an integration of the normal distribution. Comparison of the calculated values of power with exact values revealed a high degree of accuracy

  • Factor analysis of rank-ordered data: An old approach revisited

    J Arthur Woodward, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1976•Cited by: 1

  • Reassertion of the paradoxical power of tests of significance based on unreliable difference scores

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1976•Cited by: 1

  • An Approximate Confidence Interval for Maximum Coefficient Alpha

    George W Joe, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1975

An approximate confidence interval is developed for the maximum coefficient alpha reliability of a scale where the scale is considered fixed an persons are sampled

  • Multivariate analysis of variance by multiple regression methods

    J Arthur Woodward, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1975•Cited by: 3

  • Unreliability of difference scores: A paradox for measurement of change

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1975•Cited by: 10

The use of difference scores to measure change in experimental research has often been faulted on the grounds that errors of measurement are additive. In research concerned with differences between experimental treatment groups, the loss in reliability due to calculation of difference scores is not a valid concern because the power of tests of significance is maximum when the reliability of the difference scores is zero

  • A General Multivariate Analysis of Variance Computer Program

    Open Access•J Arthur Woodward, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1974

A multivariate analysis of variance computer program is presented which employs general linear regression methods to obtain solutions consistent with any of the available methods for dealing with unequal and disproportionate cell frequencies. Documentation is provided
