Dimensions of Cognitive Closure
This study investigated the generality of the perceptual factors of speed and flexibility of closure in the cognitive domain. Several experimental measures of both flexibility and speed of closure employing perceptual or figural content, verbal or symbolic content, and semantic content were administered to 541 Naval Aviation Cadets, along with marker measures for several established factors. In addition to several of these marker dimensions, fact…
Application of T-Technique Factor Analysis to the Stock Market
Proportional changes in the prices of 425 individual common stocks were recorded for each of 44 quarter-year periods. After normalization of the data for each stock, sums of cross-products were computed among the time periods across stocks. Factor analysis of the cross-product matrix yielded seven factors. By cumulating the factor loadings successively over the 44 quarters, so as to simulate absolute values rather than change scores, six of these…
Motivational Types Among College Students
College students were related to one another over a variety of measures associated with motivation to study in college. The inverse factor analysis of these relahionships revealed ten motivational types. Data for 12 hypothetical students, entering the analysis as an extension matrix, helped to interpret the types found among the real studenb. In a table of results, the average value on each measure for students of each type k compared with the av…
The Relationship of Problem-Solving Styles to the Factor Composition of Tests
This study was undertaken to learn more about the way in which the characteristics being measured by a test vary with the kind of examinee taking the test or with the problem-solving style he uses in approaching test problems. Briefly, the procedure for this study included the following steps: (1) The subjects took 15 tests which would later be examined by factor analysis. (2) In order to find out what problem-solving styles the subjects used, th…
The Kinds of Items that Work in an Interest Activities Index
The interest items to discussed consist of brief descriptions of activities. The subject indicates whether he would like, be indifferent to, or dislike participating in each activity. Full freedom was permitted to express a liking for many activities or few, and the subjects, freshmen in their first week of college, had no particular reason to fake their responses. The list of activities carefully avoided occupational names or experiences limited…
Comparative Prediction of High-School Grades by Pure-Factor Aptitude, Information, and Personality Measures
Comparative Prediction of College Major-Field Grades By Pure-Factor Aptitude, Interest, and Personality Measures
Effect of Anxiety on Verbal and Mathematical Examination Scores
Aptitude and Interest Score Patterns Related to Satisfaction With College Major Field
As part of the research on comparative prediction of success and satisfaction in college major fields, students graduating from a men's, a women's, and a coeducational college were divided into those satisfied with their major field and those dissatisfied with their major field. With respect to each of the more popular fields, tabulations were made of these two categories and of the students who wished they had majored in the field rather than in…
Effect of Coaching on an Aptitude Test
The Validity of Some Objective Personality Tests for a Leadership Criterion
Eight objective tests developed to measure personality characteristics were given to entering cadets at the U. S. Coast Guard Academy in the summer of 1949. It was hoped that some of these would be found to relate to the ratings of leadership potential made at the Academy. These tests and the rationales for them are described. The results are presented in the form of intercorrelations among a total of 19 scores on the 8 tests, 2 academic entrance…

Analysis of Criteria for the Validation of Selection Measures at the United States Coast Guard Academy
An Analysis of Course Grades
College grades suffer as a criterion for test development because of their unreliability and because of the difficulty of comparing the grades at one college with those at another. However, since they often constitute the best criterion we have, an optimum understanding of them is desirable. Toward this end, course grade criteria at two colleges were broken down into relatively homogeneous part-grades. These were intercorrelated with the section …
