  • Home environment and cognitive development in the first 3 years of life

    Robert H Bradley, Bettye M Caldwell et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1989•Cited by: 78•References: 2

Attempted to examine the generalizability of environment/development relationships among 3 ethnic groups across the first 3 years of life. Social status did not show a consistent relationship to either quality of home environment or children's developmental status across the various groups. Results indicated a fairly consistent relationship between HOME scores and children's developmental status, although there were some ethnic and social status …

  • Successful intervention with multi-problem mothers

    Open Access•Cathryn L Booth, Kathryn E Barnard et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1987•References: 17

A two-step model of intervention for multi-problem mothers was proposed. In order to improve mother-child interaction and later developmental outcomes, the first step is for the practitioner to help the mother change her external competencies (adult social skills) and internal perceptions (support, depression). These changes make the second step possible—the mother then can learn to foster her own child's development. The model was tested in a st…

    Open Access•Sandra K Mitchell, Carol A Gray•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1981

A generalizability study was conducted to examine the consistency and stability of scores on a measure of environmental stimulation over the first two years of life. Total scores on the HOME inventory were quite consistent over time, but subscales were less so. Examination of subscales by canonical correlation and principal components factor analysis indicated that the organization of the environment changes over the first two years of life, and …

  • Interobserver agreement, reliability, and generalizability of data collected in observational studies

    Sandra K Mitchell•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1979•Cited by: 17

Research in developmental and educational psychology has come to rely less on conventional psychometric tests and more on records of behavior made by human observers in natural and quasi-natural settings. Three coefficients that purport to reflect the quality of data collected in these observational studies are dis-cussed: the interobserver agreement percentage, the reliability coefficient, and the generalizability coefficient. It is concluded th…
