Effect of subgroup ratio on stereotyping
Male and female subjects observed a discussion by a group with one of three sex ratios (9M‐IF, SM‐SF, 1M‐9F) and in which the male contributions were expressed in a more or less stereotype consistent manner. The results indicated that male speakers were stereotyped less than females and that male compared with female speakers were stereotyped increasingly less as the number of like speakers in the group increased
Factors Influencing Young Children's Ability to Detect Logical Inconsistencies in Oral Communications
Factors influencing the ability of kindergarten and first grade children to detect inconsistencies in communications were investigated in two experiments. The first experiment revealed that detection was better when the inconsistency occurred between contiguous rather than interspersed statements but that performance was not influenced by the particular source of the story (an adult versus a puppet). The second experiment manipulated set (whether…
Arbitrariness of frustration
The purpose of the present research was to assess the relative influence of instigation or inhibition in mediating retaliation after arbitrary or non‐arbitrary frustration. Sixty‐four men were asked to learn a concept that was being taught by a peer. Although all men were frustrated, half were deliberately frustrated while the other half were not deliberately frustrated by the teacher. Following the task, the learner was given the opportunity to …
Emotional arousal and aggressive behavior
Life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis are two prime tools that have been used to evaluate the sustainability of novel EU projects, which investigated new strategies to improve product yields and reduce costs, while ensuring a good ecological footprint and cost efficiency. These include EU projects focussed on developing modular, compact production platforms with intensified reactors-such as the F3 Factory, COPIRIDE (combining p…
Judgements of Aggression Serving Personal Versus Prosocial Purposes
Two studies using a university and a high school population were conducted in which subjects read a transcript of an interview including a description of an aggressive incident. The aggressor was attractive or unattractive, and his intentions in aggressing were either to hurt the victim (hostile aggression), to return a wallet to its rightful owner (social-instrumental) or to keep the wallet for himself (personal-instrumental). Subjects evaluated…
Moral judgments of aggression
One hundred and twenty‐eight women read a transcript of an interview which described either an attractive or unattractive male interviewee who aggressed against another with either a good or bad intention and with mild or severe consequences for the victim. The results of a 2 × 2 × 2 analysis of variance yielded several significant effects. Aggression committed by an attractive person and also by one who had good intentions was judged more favora…
