  • Retracted: Do conservatives really have an advantage in mental health? An examination of measurement invariance

    Open Access•E Dutton, E O W Kirkegaard et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Psychology•2025•References: 29

Many studies have found that conservatives show an advantage in mental health and happiness and various causes of this have been debated (e.g., religiousness, ideology, or genetics). However, not much attention has been given to examining whether this advantage is psychometrically real, or whether it is due to test bias. We analyzed data from two large Finnish surveys of adults (Ns = 848 and 4,978) from Lahtinen (2024), that measured general anxi…

  • Sex and national differences in internet addiction in Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Open Access•Salaheldin Fararh Bakhiet, Khaled Elsayed Ziada et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

BACKGROUND: Understanding individual differences in psychology, and how they relate to specific addictions, may allow society to better identify those at most risk and even enact policies to ameliorate them. Internet addiction is a growing health concern, a research focus of which is to understand individual differences and the psychology of those most susceptible to developing it. Western countries are strongly overrepresented in this regard. ME…

  • The General Factor of Personality (GFP) is associated with higher salary, having a leadership position, and working in a social job

Open Access•Dimitri Van Der Linden, Curtis S Dunkel et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

Previous studies have suggested that a general factor exists at the top of the hierarchal structure of personality. One interpretation of this General Factor of Personality (GFP) is that it reflects social effectiveness. Accordingly, in a large employee sample (N = 1267), we tested whether the GFP relates to several outcomes assumed to be linked with social effectiveness. Specifically, we examine whether the GFP is positively related to salary an…

  • Decreases in divergent thinking across age groups from 2005 to 2018 amongst school children in Sudan

Open Access•Salaheldin Fararh Attallah Bakhiet, E Dutton et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2022

Performances on tests of creativity have been found to be in decline in the USA. Here, we explore scores on divergent thinking tests in private schools in Khartoum State in Sudan by comparing a 2005 and a 2018 administration of the Torrance Standardized Circles test to 8- to 12-year-olds of both sexes. We find a decline across the period in all three dimensions of the test (Fluency, Flexibility and Originality), as well as in the overall index of…

  • “Blessed are the Nations with High Levels of Schizophrenia”: National Level Schizophrenia Prevalence and Its Relationship with National Levels of Religiosity

Open Access•E Dutton, Guy Madison•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2022

Schizophrenia is correlated with religious delusions but, heretofore, the relationship between schizophrenia prevalence and religiosity has not been explored at the national level. Examining this relationship, we find that national level schizophrenia prevalence is correlated with national level religiosity and strongly negatively correlated with national level atheism across 125 countries. When controlling for cognitive performance and economic …

  • Factor structure in Raven’s Progressive Matrices Plus in sub-Saharan Africa – Benin and Djibouti

David Becker, Gerhard Meisenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology in Africa•2022

A recent meta-analysis identified factor structures in IQ-test results from non-western nations similar to those found in samples from western countries, with mostly strong loadings on a general factor. In this study, we identified the factor structure on Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices Plus (SPM+) in two samples of school children from Benin (n = 3 560) and Djibouti (n = 2 768). The SPM+ gained good overall reliabilities in both countries …

  • Here the Status Symbols Clash: Social status and status expression in Finnish homes

    Open Access•E Dutton•ARTICLE•Suomen Antropologi Journal of the…•2022

This article aims to make an original contribution to the discussion of the dynamics of social status expression in Finland. Drawing upon fieldwork in Oulu and Kokkola, it will examine how a sample of Finnish people express and play for social status through the objects with which they decorate their homes. It suggests that Finnish social stratification may be undergoing a shift away from correlation with formal education towards identification w…

  • Sex and Culture Differences in Cultural Intelligence: A Study Comparing Saudi Arabians and Egyptians

Open Access•Khaled Elsayed Ziada, Dimitri Van Der Linden et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2021

Cultural Intelligence (CI) refers to the motivation and ability to understand and deal with cultural differences. As such, it is assumed to play a role in the effectiveness of social contact and communication between people from different cultures. Given its relevance to international relations, it is imperative to test which individual and group factors are associated with CI. Therefore, in the present study we examine cross-cultural and gender …

  • The Myth of the Stupid Believer: The Negative Religiousness–IQ Nexus is Not on General Intelligence (g) and is Likely a Product of the Relations Between IQ and Autism Spectrum Traits

Open Access•E Dutton, Jan te Nijenhuis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2020

Numerous studies have found a negative relationship between religiousness and IQ. It is in the region of − 0.2, according to meta-analyses. The reasons for this relationship are, however, unknown. It has been suggested that higher intelligence leads to greater attraction to science, or that it helps to override evolved cognitive dispositions such as for religiousness. Either way, such explanations assume that the religion–IQ nexus is on general i…

Introduction Gender dysphoria (GD) is associated with several psychiatric conditions, but the causal links are not known. We note that some of these conditions are associated with physiological masculinisation. Methods Here, we explore this association through a series of systematic reviews, using Google Scholar, on original studies that test the relationship between GD and at least one correlate of androgens, namely autism spectrum disorder, lef…

  • Recent ethnographic research and the modern Finnish 'social class' system as an evolutionary strategy

    E Dutton•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2012•References: 23

This report will contribute to the anthropological debate over the usefulness of applying the social class model to Finland by looking at current Finnish socioeconomic differences through the prism of evolution and specifically as breeding strategies. It will defend the application of the social class model to Finland and argue that its utility is further evidenced by looking at social classes as ecologies. The report will argue that Finland’s so…

  • The Culture Shock of St Patrick

    Open Access•E Dutton•ARTICLE•Estudios Irlandeses•2011

Introduction St Patrick is an ancient saint while Culture Shock is a relatively modern phrase. ‘Cultural Shock’ was first recorded in 1929 (Gamio 1929) with ‘Culture Shock’ following in 1931 (Carpenter 1931). So it is unsurprising that in all of the numerous scholarly works on St Patrick (e.g. Thompson 1999, Hayes-Healy 2005, Freeman 2005, Kinane 2008

  • Tolerant Evangelism. A Student Evangelical Group in a ‘Tolerant’ Culture

    E Dutton•ARTICLE•Dutch Crossing•2004•Cited by: 1

This paper examines the nature of evangelism amongst an evangelical group at a Dutch university and compares it to a similar group at a British university. In assessing the differences the paper submits that, to a great extent, an explanation can be found in the centrality of ‘Tolerance’ to Dutch cultural life which it suggests leads to an emphasis on Witness Evangelism. The paper examines the history and beliefs of both groups as well as explain…

  • Eye-glazing and the anthropology of religion: The positive and negative aspects of experiencing and not understanding an emotional phenomenon in religious studies research

    Open Access•E Dutton•ARTICLE•Anthropology Matters•1970•References: 4

This article will look at the phenomenon of 'eye-glazing' and the impact, both positive and negative, that this unsettling phenomenon, sometimes observed in religious studies research, has had on my own development as an anthropologist working with Evangelical groups. It will examine the experience of being unable to understand and structure a particular 'culture shock' in one's own research, focussing on eye-glazing, and will examine both the po…

    E Dutton•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2010

This article will argue that “uniqueness” can be understood as a form of Implicit Religion. This will be demonstrated through an analysis of the word and the use of fieldwork in two cultures in which “uniqueness” is a strong component of the nationalist discourse. In doing so, it will respond to serious and superficially persuasive criticisms of the idea that uniqueness relates to religion and, implicitly, to Implicit Religion as a concept. It wi…

  • Communitasand Contestation in a university evangelical group: The liminal phase and levels of structure

    E Dutton•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2010•References: 9

This article will attempt to reconcile Turner’s Communitas -based understanding of the liminal phase with the various forms of the Contestation Model propounded by his critics. It will argue that these models can, apparently, be reconciled if the given liminal phase is examined in terms of level and that this is most apparent when examining an initiation ritual rather than a pilgrimage. The article will draw upon detailed fieldwork with an evange…

    E Dutton•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2011

This article will examine the religious dimensions to the phenomenon of Culture Shock. Drawing upon a functionalist definition of religion, it will argue, with some nuances, that Culture Shock sits in the Romantic tradition of Cultural Relativism and that this is best understood in religious terms. It will also compare Culture Shock to Religious Experience and Conversion Experience, further demonstrating its implicit religiosity. It will recommen…

  • Towards a Scientific Model of Culture Shock and Intercultural Communication

    Open Access•E Dutton•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural…•2011•References: 9

This article seeks to make an original contribution to the study of intercultural communication by examining the ‘culture shock’ model by means of scientific theories of behaviour. It will argue that although culture chock is built on both cultural determinist and cultural relativist foundations, it is broadly empirically accurate. However, it needs to be rendered consilient. Applying Genetic Similarity Theory to it renders it consilient and, ind…
