  • The motivation to breastfeed: A fit to the opponent-process theory

Harriet H Myers, Paul S Siegel•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1985

The opponent-process theory, a dynamic model of acquired motivation presented by Solomon and Corbit (1974), was applied to the process of breastfeeding. A modified form of the Nowlis Mood Adjective Checklist (MACL, Nowlis, 1965, 1970) and a discomfort measure were used in assessing through recall the affective course predicted by the theory. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and correlational procedures. Resu…

  • Irrelevant Aversive Stimulation as an Activator of an Appetitional Response: A Replication

    Open Access•Paul S Siegel, David L Sparks•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1961

Few investigators have succeeded in demonstrating the validity of Hull's original generalized drive hypothesis (1943). And methodologies have varied widely. Within one design, an appetitional response is first established under one set of motivating conditions; its strength subsequently assessed under a different set. Thus, Miller (1948) showed that rats, trained hungry to respond appropriately for food on an elevated T-maze, would continue to do…

  • The Completion Compulsion in Human Eating

    Open Access•Paul S Siegel•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1957

Informal observation of the adult in the eating situation suggests that he eats in units. Voluntary intake seems to be governed by a kind of quantum principle. If real, this is of considerable psychological significance for there is little reason to believe that satiation, as the fulfillment of a bodily need, is in any sense a discontinuous process. Formal evidence for a sort of completion compulsion is found in striking fashion in a study recent…
