The Heritage Major within the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at UTS 1996–2007
The Heritage Major was introduced in 1994 specifically for those students who had a language facility and ethnic identification with a country that was not offered in the broad suite of sites available to Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) students enrolled in country-specific Majors at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). These are my reflections as the coordinator of the program between 1999 and 2007
The Southeast Asia Major within the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at UTS 1996–2007
Between 1996 and 2007, the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) at the University of Technology Sydney offered students the opportunity to engage in transformative In-Country Study (ICS) experiences in Southeast Asia. These transformative experiences broadened students’ intellectual horizons, fostered meaningful connections, and inspired successful careers in fields such as diplomacy, journalism, and academia. Comparison of Daily and Retrospective Reports of Vaginal Sex in Heterosexual Men and Women
This study examined the agreement between daily and retrospective reports of vaginal sex over a two-month period in a sample of 376 heterosexually active men and women. We also examined whether gender, age, or method of daily data collection (self-administered vs. interviewer administered) were related to agreement between daily and retrospective reports. Both counts and categorical measures of frequency of the behaviors were examined. There were…

Content Analysis of Drug Offenders' Sketches on the Draw-an-Event Test for Risky Sexual Situations
Objectives: To evaluate the utility of the Draw-an-Event Test for risky sexual situations (DET-RS), a nonverbal memory-based assessment tool used for productions of spontaneous content associated with risky sex. Methods: Traditional holistic coding analysis of 298 drug offenders' content productions. Results: Content analyses of DET-RS sketches provided increased understanding of substance use and other context preceding risky sexual situations w…
Adolescent Drinking and Sex
Adolescent Drinking and Sex
These findings challenge the widely accepted hypothesis that drinking is a cause of sexual risk-taking. Rather, they underscore the need for interventions to increase teenagers'access to and ability to use condoms
Alcohol and Condom Use
BACKGROUND: Although it is often assumed that drinking alcohol interferes with condom use, studies on this topic have used several different methods and have yielded inconsistent findings. By examining drinking and condom use in specific sexual encounters, the role of alcohol in influencing unprotected intercourse is targeted. GOAL: The goal of the study was to assess the relationship of alcohol use and condom use in discrete sexual encounters us…

National symbols are part of a country's historical material culture. They are an indication of how those in power within the country wish the nation to be represented on the global stage.Intersecting with such cultural and political factors are the ways in which economic enterprises construct objects or artifacts that over time assume the status of national icons. The focus in this article is on two examples of Malaysian material culture that are …
Daily data collection of sexual and other health‐related behaviors
Is daily data collection of sexual and other health‐related behaviors reactive? This question was examined by exploring trends in daily reports of sexual intercourse, condom use, drinking, smoking, and vegetable and fruit consumption over a 2‐month period. The trends were examined for evidence of fatigue effects and socially desirable responding. The effects of data collection method and gender were also examined. Results from a hierarchical line…
Daily data collection
This paper compares three methods for daily data collection to examine the co‐occurrence of intoxication and unsafe sex at the incident level. Sexually transmitted disease clinic clients and sexually active college students were randomized to complete either written daily diaries, daily telephone interviews they initiated, or daily telephone interviews initiated by project staff, for a period of 4 weeks. The three methods are compared on rates of…
Learning and Knowing Boundaries
Schooling practices in Indonesia take place within a centrally structured educational bureaucracy. The paper focuses on primary and secondary schools, which have undergone rapid expansion since the oil boom of the early 1 980s. Taking school examinations as sociological objects of study, there is an attempt to understand the students' mental processes as they prepare for these determinative events. Every question in every subject has a correct an…

The relationship of alcohol use to sexual activity in a U.S. national sample
Substance use and risky sexual behavior for exposure to HIV
The sexual behavior of US adults
OBJECTIVES. One consequence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has been to highlight the need for population-based estimates of the number of individuals engaging in sexual behaviors that place them at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This paper describes the prevalence of various sexual behaviors in a nationally representative sample of adults in the United States. METHODS. Data were collected as part…
Alcohol consumption and unsafe sexual behavior in discrete events
Recent studies with samples of homosexual men have demonstrated that drinking in conjunction with sexual activity is strongly related to unsafe sexual activities known to increase the risk of AIDS transmission. Most existing studies have assessed the relationship of general measures of drinking and general frequency of risky sexual activities. Such a design, however, does not establish that drinking and risky behaviors occurred on the same occasi…

On the scope of alcohol expectancy research
An article by Leigh (1989d) examined certain substantive and measurement-related limitations of research on alcohol outcome expectancies. Leigh (1989d) criticized research in this field on both conceptual and methodological grounds and speculated on future theoretical directions for research in the field. In their response, Goldman, Brown, Christiansen, and Smith (1991) contended that Leigh's critique is faulty in important respects. However, som…
