Peircean Index in the Naming Process
This analysis identifies semiotic differences between pronouns, proper names and count and mass nouns. It showcases the work of Peirce’s Index in the process of individuation, capitalizing upon the ontological and epistemological effects of employing pronouns (particularly demonstratives) as individuals, as opposed to their use as singulars. Peirce’s individual versus singular distinction highlights the contrast between unique separateness, on th…
Translation, representation and the Deaf 'voice
In this article, we introduce a complex world of working with qualitative data in multiple languages, modalities and media. We share some of the theoretical considerations that influenced our decisions about when to translate, what and how. We also report some of the multiple possibilities available to the researcher when analysing data in a visual language - in this case, British Sign Language - sharing considerations in choosing one method over…
Deaf-Hearing Family Life
This article brings together poetic narratives of three women-two hearing and one deaf-who are mothers to both deaf and hearing children. When asked, "What's the story of your family?" they each uncover, discover, and recover narratives that embrace politics, spirituality, marginalization, ignorance, resistance, love, care, and celebration. Their stories-signed, spoken, and written-deconstruct and reconstruct intimate and poignant experiences of …
Negotiating the Legacy of Hearingness
Rachel and Donna are hearing, sign-language-using researchers who, since 1989/1999, respectively, have worked in the field of Deaf Studies. In 2008, they were both invited, separately, to present at a conference called "I am Deaf: Deaf Studies in the 21st Century" that caused them to reassess who they are and where they fit with Deaf Studies. Donna presented, and Rachel booked a foreign holiday

An Empirical Basis for Standardizing Adherence Measures Derived From Administrative Claims Data Among Diabetic Patients
OBJECTIVE: To compare the predictive validity of 8 different adherence measures by studying the variability explained between each measure and 2 outcome measures: hospitalization episodes and total nonpharmacy cost among Medicaid eligible persons diagnosed with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN: This study was a retrospective analysis of the Arkansas Medicaid administrative claims data from January 2000 to December 2006. SUBJECTS: Diabetic (ICD-9-CM = 25…
Five year follow-up of a smoking withdrawal clinic population
Eight hundred volunteers who attended smoking clinics at Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1964-1965 were followed up five years later to ascertain their current smoking status. From three waves of a mailed questionnaire, plus a telephone campaign, we obtained 559 usable responses. The relationship between smoking status at the five-year follow-up and clinic protocols and selected social and psychological characteristics as determined during t…
